Safeguarding changes considered for trans youth

Posted: 19th October 2022

The Telegraph reports that NHS England has drafted new guidelines that could see NHS professionals given the power to advise a patient’s primary care doctor to initiate “safeguarding protocols” if they are taking privately-obtained hormone treatments or puberty blockers in cases where they are deemed to be unsafe. Such protocols would involve safeguarding teams that include medical, police and local authority professionals. Years-long waits for transgender young people seeking care has led growing numbers to seek to obtain treatment privately or through unregulated online pharmacies.
