Amazon has launched the Alexa Young Innovator Challenge for secondary school children, to create new skills and abilities for Alexa, its digital assistant, to solve real-world problems. Previous Amazon Future Engineer schemes, delivered with educational charities such as Code.org and Teach First, have helped teach skills like coding to thousands of pupils. Amazon is providing free curriculum-linked lesson plans and resources as part of the challenge and pupils can test their ideas through the Massachusetts Institute Of technology’s app inventor website. Lauren Kisser, Amazon technology director, said the challenge will hopefully inspire children to learn the AI and technology skills the economy will need. Kisser added: “A third of secondary school children do not think there are any real-world applications for AI, they think its science fiction stuff. We need to teach these skills in schools. ”
