DESCRIPTION:🏷️ From £135 *Available to BSA members at member cost*\n🎧 All who work in boarding\n📍 Online \n\nCourse Outline: \nBoarding school staff must carefully balance the needs and schedules of both flexi boarders and full boarders. \nFlexi boarders\, who may only stay on campus a few nights a week\, may require less supervision and structure than full boarders\, who live on campus full-time. To accommodate both types of students\, staff may need to be flexible with scheduling and have different levels of supervision for each group. Additionally\, they may need to create separate spaces or activities for flexi boarders to ensure they have a sense of belonging and connection to the school community. \nCommunication with both students and their families is also important to ensure everyone is on the same page and expectations are clear. For house parents\, the challenges will involve the logistics of flexi-boarding management in relation to booking systems and staffing. For the school and the boarding house\, the important questions will be identifying why pupils’ flexi-board and how\, as a boarding community\, we embrace the growing demand.  \nLearning outcomes: \n\nTo develop a robust system of registering flexi boarders\nTo develop an induction process for flexi boarders in line with NMS (National Minimum Standards)\nCreating a stable environment for full boarders with little disruption from flexi-boarders\nIdentifying the logistics caused by flexi-boarding that need to be resolved.\n\nDelegates will leave the session with a range of techniques to plan flexi boarding logistics\, enabling the boarding team to become more efficient in planning and organisation. Resilience is therefore a critical skill for the next generation\, yet it remains largely underdeveloped within the current education system. \nThis one-hour session explores what resilience really means\, why it matters for young people today\, and how it can be measured and developed in education. He studied French and Spanish at Aston University and L’Institut d’Etudes Politiques\, Lille\, France. Having taught English at St George’s College in Buenos Aires\, he returned to the UK to take up a boarding post at Old Swinford Hospital School where he spent three years. He then moved on to become a Housemaster at Elmhurst Ballet School in Birmingham. He joined Steyning Grammar School in April 2014 as Deputy Director of Boarding\, taking over as Director of Boarding (AHT) two years later. He is a member of the West Sussex DSL Executive and Diocese of Chichester Racial Justice Committee.

During his 17 years of living in 4 boys and Co-Ed boarding houses\, spanning 3 UK HMC schools\, there really isn’t much he hasn’t seen and dealt with. \nBoarding houses run on culture\, good or bad\, it becomes the cornerstone of the house identify. That culture will always be set by the Houseparent – intentionally or not\, and you must be on the front foot\, it’s your ship. \nFailure to acknowledge this and hold it in your thinking through your first year will create a mess with much suffering for everyone\, only some of which you will ever know about. Setting\, or adjusting\, the culture in a house is a delicate manoeuvre requiring EQ\, time\, tact\, tactics\, resilience\, consistency\, candour\, and a sense of humour..! \nDuring his first tenure as a Housemaster\, buried in paperwork\, Andrew Co-Founded an Ed Tech company specialising in boarding and pastoral management: information flow\, informed decision making\, compliance\, and staff workload reduction. Launched at a BSA conference in 2015\, the software ultimately generated significantly benefits for boarding staff at various HMC schools.  \nWhile working internationally\, Andrew held a series of SLT roles leading on: Academic\, Pastoral\, Co-Curriculum\, Staff\, Sixth Form\, and Admin at whole school levels in premium British schools in China\, Singapore\, Qatar\, and Egypt.
