SUMMARY:Flexi-boarding models
DESCRIPTION:🏷️ From £135 *Available to BSA members at member cost*\n🎧 All who work in boarding\n📍 Online \n\nCourse Outline: \nBoarding school staff must carefully balance the needs and schedules of both flexi boarders and full boarders. \nFlexi boarders\, who may only stay on campus a few nights a week\, may require less supervision and structure than full boarders\, who live on campus full-time. To accommodate both types of students\, staff may need to be flexible with scheduling and have different levels of supervision for each group. Additionally\, they may need to create separate spaces or activities for flexi boarders to ensure they have a sense of belonging and connection to the school community. \nCommunication with both students and their families is also important to ensure everyone is on the same page and expectations are clear. For house parents\, the challenges will involve the logistics of flexi-boarding management in relation to booking systems and staffing. For the school and the boarding house\, the important questions will be identifying why pupils’ flexi-board and how\, as a boarding community\, we embrace the growing demand.  \nLearning outcomes: \n\nTo develop a robust system of registering flexi boarders\nTo develop an induction process for flexi boarders in line with NMS (National Minimum Standards)\nCreating a stable environment for full boarders with little disruption from flexi-boarders\nIdentifying the logistics caused by flexi-boarding that need to be resolved.\n\nDelegates will leave the session with a range of techniques to plan flexi boarding logistics\, enabling the boarding team to become more efficient in planning and organisation. They will also be able to evaluate how to ensure the experience is positive for all stakeholders. \nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeaker: \nAllison Onions\, Head of Safeguarding and Mental Health\, St George’s School\, Windsor  \nAlly Onions is currently the Head of Safeguarding and Mental Health at St George’s School Windsor Castle. He works at the same school as his wife\, Megan Boyce\, who is Housemistress of another boarding house. People are different. Some are like us\, and some are very different. \nThese differences can sometimes make relationships difficult\, and this in turn can affect how we feel\, and what we do. This makes “Managing Difficult Conversations” with people whom we live and work with challenging. \nWhat does ‘difficult’ mean? \nOur brain is our own central computer that takes in information from the world around us and gives that information meaning. However\, different people interpret events and information differently. We don’t all see the same thing in the same way. This session will provide some insights into how and why Mastering the art of Difficult Conversations is important. \nThe session will be interactive\, including some group activities and discussions. \nBy the end of the session you will be able to: \n\nUnderstand the types of difficult conversations\nIdentify the impact of non-action\nUnderstand the pitfalls when managing a difficult conversation\nIdentify key aspects that drive behaviour\nUnderstand the approaches for different characters\nIdentify the steps to help you Master Difficult Conversations\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeaker: \nTracy-Anne Barker \nTracy-Anne is a UK-based former director\, senior manager\, and lead for commercial\, public\, and charity sector education organisations. Her business is training and coaching leaders and managers in the education sector. \nWith over 30 years of experience\, she has trained thousands of managers\, team leaders\, and supervisors. \nEvery part of growing up\,  at school and in Tracy-Anne’s early career\, was influenced by people who ‘believed’ in her. Without these people giving her a chance\, believing in her ability\, and supporting her progression\, she would not have developed into the person she is today. \nShe firmly believes that if you reach for the stars and work hard\, your background does not need to hold you back. If you want to change and grasp an opportunity\, you can progress. \nWhen you support and champion individuals\, you help them achieve the right mindset\, focus\, and ambition.  Tracy-Anne takes it as her responsibility to do just that. \nTracy-Anne will admit she got it disastrously wrong in the early days of her management career\, but she now knows how to set a firm foundation from which to lead a team of people.   That is why the title of her book is ‘How Not to Balls It Up’. \nIt’s these foundations Tracy-Anne has used to create her business to Train\, Mentor\, Support\, and Coach Heads of Departments\, Supervisors\, Managers\, and Team Leaders in the Education sector.

SUMMARY:Flexi-boarding models
DESCRIPTION:Date: April 30\, 2024\nTime: 10:00 – 12:00\nCost: TIOB Member Rate – £110\, Non-member Rate – £220\nAudience: Boarding staff\, matrons\, boarding tutors\, house parents. This session is focussed on boarding staff in prep schools but equally applicable to those in a senior school\nPlatform: Zoom (online) – 1/2 day seminar\n\n\nCourse Outline: \nBoarding school staff must carefully balance the needs and schedules of both flexi boarders and full boarders. For house parents\, the challenges will involve the logistics of flexi boarding management in relation to booking systems and staffing. \nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeaker: \nAlly Onions\, Head of Safeguarding & Mental Health\, YMHFA\, Boarding Houseparent\, St. George’s School \n Ally Onions is currently the Head of Safeguarding and Mental Health at St George’s School Windsor Castle. With her husband Jonny\, they run the boarding house\, which includes looking after the choristers who sing in St George’s Chapel. Ally has worked in boarding education for over 20 years. She recently completed an MA in Boarding Education\, looking at resilience and prep boarders. Ally is a trained Mental Health First Aider and Instructor Member\, and is currently rolling out training to staff and parents. \n

In surveys run by BSA and TIOB in 2023\, this was a main concern for boarding leaders. Many boarding staff also reported considering leaving the profession or feeling stuck in terms of career progression. \nIn this interactive seminar\, boarding leaders will share practices which have had a positive impact on recruitment and retention in their settings. \nLearning Outcomes: \n\nEffective advertising\nCreative recruitment\nEngaging day staff with boarding\nInduction and mentoring\nTraining and CPD\n\nBOOK NOW \nSpeakers: \nEmma Custodio\, Director of Boarding\, Royal High School Bath \nEmma is currently Director of Boarding at The Royal High School\, Bath and she has enjoyed working at a variety of models of boarding schools (Sherborne\, Headington\, Benenden and now Royal High School Bath)\, developing her own career over 24 years. Her foray into boarding began as a Deputy Housemistress setting up a new girls’ boarding house with no prior knowledge or experience of boarding schools\, just a PGCE in my pocket and the unknown ahead! Having been inspired by the Housemistress she worked for\, she absolutely fell in love with my role\, particularly caring for boarders and being a part of the boarding community\, as well as having a meaningful impact on the boarders’ lives. In return she would like to try to inspire others who work with her\, give them opportunities to develop and teach them the skills required so that they might consider furthering their career in boarding. \n\n \nTanya Lee\, Deputy Head (Pastoral)\, The King’s School\, Canterbury \nTanya started her career teaching RS in a large comprehensive in Dorset\, but with boarding in her background she was soon drawn back and was Housemistress at St Mary’s Wantage\, and then at Wycombe Abbey. She is currently trying to understand how so many years working in boarding have passed!

SUMMARY:Prep School: Juggling the demands of the flexi boarder
DESCRIPTION:Date: February 24\, 2023\nTime: 10:00 – 12:00\nCost: Member Rate – £100\, Non-member Rate – £200\nAudience: Boarding staff\, matrons\, boarding tutors\, house parents. This session is focussed on boarding staff in prep schools but equally applicable to those in a senior school\nPlatform: Zoom (online)\n\n\nBoarding school staff must carefully balance the needs and schedules of both flexi boarders and full boarders. For house parents\, the challenges will involve the logistics of flexi boarding management in relation to booking systems and staffing. \n\nSpeaker: Allison Onions\, Head of Safeguarding & Mental Health \,YMHFA & Boarding Houseparent\, St George’s School Windsor Castle \nAlly has over 20 years boarding experience and has worked in mixed and single sex boarding prep houses across full and flexi boarding houses\, from rural Shropshire to the current school in Windsor\, where boarding also includes looking after the Choristers\, as part of their role sing and board during Christmas and Easter. \nAlly has recently been a tutor on the BSA certificate course\, a role Ally very much enjoyed\, and this year at school has taken on the role as Head of Safeguarding and leading on Mental Health at school as well as continuing to run the boarding house with Jonny (Ally’s husband) and team. \nWhen not doing these things\, Ally enjoys time with family\, reading\, running\, yoga and walking the dog – who is also the school wellbeing dog\, a standard poodle called Olive. \nBOOK NOW
