He was educated at Emanuel School and graduated with honours in Chemistry from King’s College\, London. His first headship took him to Somerset where he was Headmaster of Sexey’s School (BSA) in Bruton. Prior to this he was Deputy Head at Bedford School (HMC)\, Director of Science at St Benedict’s School in Ealing (HMC)\, Senior Housemaster at Whitgift School (HMC) and Assistant Housemaster and Teacher of Chemistry at The Haberdashers’ Aske’s School for Boys (HMC). He has been the Chairman of the State Boarding Schools’ Forum\, the Vice Chair of the Boarding Schools’ Association and is currently it’s London Chair. He also sits on the Executive Committee of the BSA as the Inclusion and Diversity representative for the sector and is the co-founder of the ISC’s Inclusion and Diversity Group.  He regularly lectures at the Royal Institution of Great Britain\, is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts\, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and is also a Justice of the Peace. As well as being a school Governor\, he is also the trustee of various charities and used to sit on the Board of Education at the Diocese of Bath & Wells. A key part of her role involved supporting local and multinational clients to achieve their strategic  goals.  Prior to Inclusion Labs\, she worked in Strategy and Research with a focus  on start-ups.  Temi is a mum of two daughters and committed to helping schools  ask the right questions and focus on the important things when it comes to  diversity\, equity and inclusion.  Inclusion Labs offers a custom programme for schools\, grounded in research and best practice\, but most importantly on the lived experience of students and families\, particularly those from underrepresented groups. \n  \n\nUnderstanding Equality and the Law \nThis session will cover the various elements of equality included within English legislation and the obligations they place on organisations. It will also consider whether the protections are adequate and whether they allow Schools to genuinely demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusivity. \nSpeaker:  Gemma Woodhouse\, Partner\, Penningtons Manches Cooper LLP \nGemma is an employment partner at Penningtons Manches Cooper. She advises organisations on all elements of employment law including discrimination and equal opportunities. She also works with a number of independent schools and is joint Head of the Penningtons Manches Cooper Schools Sector. \n  \n  \nDelivering equitable outcomes \nSpeaker: Yasmina Kone\, Hemisphere Education \nYasmina is Deputy Lead of Hemisphere Education. She’s an award-winning start-up operator that’s worked with some of the UK’s top corporate and start-up companies. Her social impact work has seen her feature in the BBC\, Black Tech Fest and Busy Being Black Podcast\, and her clients have included FTSE500 companies where she’s helped to open access to minority groups and use business as force for good. She’s passionate about the impact that the education sector can have on creating a more inclusive society and is leading on Hemisphere Education’s adoption in UK schools. \n  \n\nLeadership Challenges and Opportunities \nHow can you lead as effectively as possible\, building capacity and confidence so that others move forward and achieve all they can? To end the day\, we will briefly consider next steps and things to be researching or thinking about before the second day of this course. \nSpeaker:  Aiyaz Ahmed\, Biology Teacher and Diversity Champion\, Eastbourne College \nAiyaz has been teaching at Eastbourne College for five years and started up a pupil lead diversity forum named BE YOU four years ago\, which he currently leads. Over the years this has become more popular and an integral part of the college. It has shaped the culture of the college community and has also empowered young people to be part of the changes that promote inclusivity and diversity. Aiyaz is passionately dedicated to his role and works collaboratively with the PSHE lead\, HR\, HoDs and SMT to drive the changes that they feel will make the college more diverse and inclusive. Prior to this\, Aiyaz taught science at inner London secondary schools for ten years. \n  \n\nEquity\, Diversity and Inclusion: Safeguarding and Inspection \nThis session will look at safeguarding with an equity\, diversity and inclusion lens and will consider key inspection requirements. \n \nSpeaker:  Dale Wilkins\, Senior Director\, BSA and BSA Group \nDale joined the BSA during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards. In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board and has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding since 2002. Dale had previously been a BSA course tutor since 1998 and developed the BSA Self-Assessment Toolkit\, which was updated in 2022. \n\nIdentity\, Belonging and Connectedness.  \nThis session will explore the notions of identity\, belonging and connectedness. Ammy Davis Potter will share her own stories of identity and belonging as well as her experiences of working with young people in schools. How do our different and often intersecting identities shape our capacity to belong and connect and how can schools provide an environment where connectedness thrives? \n \nSpeaker: Ammy Davis Potter \nAmmy is an educational consultant and inclusive education specialist. She worked in boarding schools for 30 years in a number of different roles including Head of Department\, Houseparent\, Head of Boarding and Deputy Head (Pastoral).  She then worked for the BSA Group as Director of Guardianship and Inclusion before setting up Ammy Davies Education in 2023 providing consultancy for schools\, other businesses and private families. \n  \nSpeaker: Mutisunge Edwards\, Christ’s Hospital \nMutisunge Edwards is the first ever full-time equity\, diversity and inclusion lead at Christ’s Hospital School. Mutisunge Edwards is now working closely with staff in all departments\, as well as with pupils\, to help ensure that all aspects of the school’s work are viewed through the EDI lens. Her background is predominantly in Early Years education. Throughout her career\, she has tried to implement change and integrate inclusion from a young age. \n  \n\nCase Studies\, Discussion and Closing Remarks \nThis session will be similar to the one at the end of day 1 in that it will provide an opportunity to hear first-hand from school leaders about EDI work in their schools. The case studies will cover a range of different areas to complement those discussed on day 1. Participants will then have the chance to meet and discuss EDI work in their schools with other Inclusion Lead colleagues (in small zoom break out groups). The day will close with an opportunity to reflect on the how\, the why and the what of the Inclusion lead role and moving forward in an effective and impactful way. \nSpeaker : Sadia Hussain-Savuk\, DEI Lead\, Fettes College Edinburgh and Independent EDI educational consultant \nSadia is the DEI Lead at Fettes College\, also working independently to provide DEI support to support to other independent schools in Scotland.  She started her teaching career in 2008 as a Biology teacher after having initially worked for the NHS as a scientist. He has held positions of Visiting Tutor\, House Tutor\, Assistant Houseparent\, Acting Houseparent and Houseparent. \nAfter teaching in both China and the UK\, he moved to Switzerland in 2020 where his hobby of coding and passion for computers turned into a subject specialism for coding and robotics. He was educated at Emanuel School and graduated with honours in Chemistry from King’s College\, London. His first headship took him to Somerset where he was Headmaster of Sexey’s School (BSA) in Bruton. Prior to this he was Deputy Head at Bedford School (HMC)\, Director of Science at St Benedict’s School in Ealing (HMC)\, Senior Housemaster at Whitgift School (HMC) and Assistant Housemaster and Teacher of Chemistry at The Haberdashers’ Aske’s School for Boys (HMC). He has been the Chairman of the State Boarding Schools’ Forum\, the Vice Chair of the Boarding Schools’ Association and is currently it’s London Chair. He also sits on the Executive Committee of the BSA as the Inclusion and Diversity representative for the sector and is the co-founder of the ISC’s Inclusion and Diversity Group.  He regularly lectures at the Royal Institution of Great Britain\, is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts\, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and is also a Justice of the Peace. The case studies will cover a range of different areas from the importance of pupil voice to recruitment. Participants will then have the chance to meet and discuss EDI work in their schools with other Inclusion Lead colleagues (in small zoom break out groups). To end the day\, we will briefly consider next steps and things to be researching or thinking about before the second day of this course. \nSpeaker:  Aiyaz Ahmed\, Biology Teacher and Diversity Champion\, Eastbourne College \nAiyaz has been teaching at Eastbourne College for five years and started up a pupil lead diversity forum named BE YOU four years ago\, which he currently leads. Over the years this has become more popular and an integral part of the college. It has shaped the culture of the college community and has also empowered young people to be part of the changes that promote inclusivity and diversity. Aiyaz is passionately dedicated to his role and works collaboratively with the PSHE lead\, HR\, HoDs and SMT to drive the changes that they feel will make the college more diverse and inclusive. Prior to this\, Aiyaz taught science at inner London secondary schools for ten years. \n  \n\nEquity\, Diversity and Inclusion: Safeguarding and Inspection \nThis session will look at safeguarding with an equity\, diversity and inclusion lens and will consider key inspection requirements. \n \nSpeaker:  Dale Wilkins\, Senior Director\, BSA and BSA Group \nDale joined the BSA during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards. In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board and has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding since 2002. Dale had previously been a BSA course tutor since 1998 and developed the BSA Self-Assessment Toolkit\, which was updated in 2022. \n\nIdentity\, Belonging and Connectedness.  \nThis session will explore the notions of identity\, belonging and connectedness. Ammy Davis Potter will share her own stories of identity and belonging as well as her experiences of working with young people in schools. How do our different and often intersecting identities shape our capacity to belong and connect and how can schools provide an environment where connectedness thrives? \n \nSpeaker: Ammy Davis Potter \nAmmy is an educational consultant and inclusive education specialist. She worked in boarding schools for 30 years in a number of different roles including Head of Department\, Houseparent\, Head of Boarding and Deputy Head (Pastoral).  She then worked for the BSA Group as Director of Guardianship and Inclusion before setting up Ammy Davies Education in 2023 providing consultancy for schools\, other businesses and private families. \n  \nSpeaker: Mutisunge Edwards\, Christ’s Hospital \nMutisunge Edwards is the first ever full-time equity\, diversity and inclusion lead at Christ’s Hospital School. Mutisunge Edwards is now working closely with staff in all departments\, as well as with pupils\, to help ensure that all aspects of the school’s work are viewed through the EDI lens. Her background is predominantly in Early Years education. Throughout her career\, she has tried to implement change and integrate inclusion from a young age. \n  \n\nCase Studies\, Discussion and Closing Remarks \nThis session will be similar to the one at the end of day 1 in that it will provide an opportunity to hear first-hand from school leaders about EDI work in their schools. Her interests and passions led her into pastoral support where she then recognised the need for more inclusive practices in education. \n  \nSpeaker:  Irfan Latif\, Principal\, DLD College London \nIrfan is currently the Principal of DLD College London\, part of the Alpha Plus Group of schools which was recently named ‘Boarding of the School of the Year 2020’. He was educated at Emanuel School and graduated with honours in Chemistry from King’s College\, London. His first headship took him to Somerset where he was Headmaster of Sexey’s School (BSA) in Bruton. Prior to this he was Deputy Head at Bedford School (HMC)\, Director of Science at St Benedict’s School in Ealing (HMC)\, Senior Housemaster at Whitgift School (HMC) and Assistant Housemaster and Teacher of Chemistry at The Haberdashers’ Aske’s School for Boys (HMC). He has been the Chairman of the State Boarding Schools’ Forum\, the Vice Chair of the Boarding Schools’ Association and is currently it’s London Chair. He also sits on the Executive Committee of the BSA as the Inclusion and Diversity representative for the sector and is the co-founder of the ISC’s Inclusion and Diversity Group.  He regularly lectures at the Royal Institution of Great Britain\, is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts\, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and is also a Justice of the Peace. As well as being a school Governor\, he is also the trustee of various charities and used to sit on the Board of Education at the Diocese of Bath & Wells. He is a keen cook\, traveller and adventurer and recently led expeditions to Everest Base Camp\, Venezuela and the Red Sea. To accommodate both types of students\, staff may need to be flexible with scheduling and have different levels of supervision for each group. Additionally\, they may need to create separate spaces or activities for flexi boarders to ensure they have a sense of belonging and connection to the school community. \nCommunication with both students and their families is also important to ensure everyone is on the same page and expectations are clear. This in turn led to a number of Senior Leadership roles at the College including Deputy Head (Pupil Performance)\, Deputy Head (Academic) and finally Senior Master. In 2023\, it was time for a change and Matt moved on to become Head of Saint Felix School in Southwold. Here\, he has undergone a programme of updating the facilities\, introducing a new curriculum\, implementing a mentoring programme and creating a bespoke Saint Felix Diploma. He then headed back to Oxford in 1999\, to become Head of History at St Edward’s School and then a Housemaster. While there\, he continued with his rugby refereeing\, coaching U16s rugby and U15s rowing\, and ran the naval section of the CCF. \nIn 2007\, Mark was appointed Deputy Headmaster and Head of Boarding at Felsted School in Essex\, where he maintained his coaching and teaching roles. It was from there\, in 2010\, that he headed north\, to take on the role of Headmaster at Ashville College in Harrogate\, an HMC co-educational day and boarding school with 870 pupils. He has been an ISI team inspector\, a school governor and Chair of the Boarding School’s Association and is now in his eighth year as Headmaster of Strathallan School. He is also a member of TIOB. \nMark is married to music teacher Caroline\, and has two sons\, one a graduate and the other in 3rd year\, University. In his spare time\, he enjoys wild camping in the Scottish islands and walking in the hills.

As well as a history in the security industry\, Jamie has been working in the education sector for over 15 years. This has also helped Jamie understand the pressures and demands that young people face today. \n\n \nWendy Griffiths\, Chair\, Independent Schools Examinations Board  \nWendy has been Chair of the Board of the Independent Schools Examinations Board (ISEB) since February 2022. Before this she was Head of Tudor Hall School\, an all-girls full boarding school. She has held the senior leadership roles of Director of Studies at St Catherine’s School\, Bramley\, and Senior Mistress at Tormead School\, Guildford.  During her time as Head Wendy was the Chair of the Boarding Schools’ Association (BSA)\, a member of the Executive of the Girls’ Schools Association (GSA) and Chair of the GSA Boarding Committee. She has previously served on board of five boarding prep schools and is currently on the board of Westbourne House School\, Chichester and on the Council of Wycombe Abbey. \n\nEd Gyde\, CEO\, Audience Social Marketing\, whose campaign experience includes delivering the ‘Talk to FRANK’ and ‘5 a day’ initiatives \nEd has lived and breathed health campaigns for two decades. Coming from a medical family he is Audience Social Marketing’s public health lead and has shaped many of the biggest national public health campaigns: ‘5 a day’\, Talk to FRANK (drugs education) and Know Your Limits (alcohol education). \n\nDr Jasmine Khouja\, Senior Research Associate\, The Tobacco and Alcohol Research Group\, University of Bristol \nJasmine’s work focuses on the causes and consequences of e-cigarette use as well as the potential impact that e-cigarette policy changes could have on adult smokers\, adult vapers and young people. Using a range of methods (including novel methods in genetic epidemiology)\, she has explored a wide variety of topics\, including the gateway hypothesis\, possible health effects of vaping\, and the potential impact of hypothetical e-liquid flavour bans. The overall aims of Jasmine’s research are to reduce health inequalities and to provide supporting evidence for policies and regulations which protect young people from harm and discourage smoking. \n\nAndrea Kis\, Doctoral Researcher\, University of Sussex \nAndrea lived in China from 2010 to 2019\, where she tutored and mentored middle school students\, taught at the Sir Horace Kadoorie Youth Development Center\, Sino-British College\, and at both JiaoTong and FuDan Universities in Shanghai. She is currently a departmental tutor in the Social Anthropology Department at the University of Sussex\, leading a seminar on Ethnography through Film while completing the final draft of her doctoral thesis on Chinese families’ elite education-migration to the UK. \n\n \nIan Lloyd\, Interim Deputy Head\, LVS Ascot \nIan has taken a rather non-standard route into education after having enjoyed successful careers in both engineering and financial services sectors.  During the first 14 years of his career\, Ian trained as an apprentice aircraft technician at British Aerospace before moving into high-street banking\, personal finance\, occupational pensions and high net worth client investment planning.  Moving into education in the early noughties\, he now has 20 years’ experience in the sector\, working in local government and state secondary schools before switching to the independent boarding school sector 8 years ago as Senior Deputy Headmaster of Myddelton College in North Wales and most recently Interim Deputy Head of LVS Ascot.  He is passionate about the judicious use of technology to support teaching\, learning and streamlining the administrative functions of education\, saving staff valuable time to focus on what they do best – supporting\, guiding and teaching children. \n\n \nAdam McRae-Taylor\, Legal Director\, Moore Barlow  \nAdam specialises in employment and education law and advises on issues such as unfair dismissal\, discrimination cases\, safeguarding\, parent contracts and data protection. Adam trained and qualified in employment law with a Magic Circle firm in London. Before joining the Schools & Charities Team at Moore Barlow\, he spent two years working in-house for a charity. \n\nSimon Pither\, Director\, PRS Training \nSimon started martial arts at a local Judo club when he was 14. Ten years later he got his first instructor qualification and has been teaching martial arts and running self-defence courses ever since\, culminating in his current role as the President of the UK Sector of the European Federation of Krav Maga. While running courses for students\, teachers\, nurses\, community clubs\, charities and corporate organisations over the years\, it became apparent that everyone wished they had learned it earlier. \n\n \nDr Chris Pyle\, Head\, Lancaster Royal Grammar School \nChris is Chair of the BSA State Boarding Forum. He has been Head of Lancaster Royal Grammar School since 2012.  The school has grown significantly over that period and has welcomed Sixth Form girls as boarders and day students. It has been judged Outstanding in all categories in three successive Ofsted boarding inspections. Chris was previously Deputy Head of the Perse School\, Cambridge. Before becoming a teacher he completed a PhD in Geography at Cambridge University and also worked in the water industry. He holds the NPQH\, is currently studying for the NPQEL in school leadership\, and is Executive Lead of the NNW Maths Hub. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society\, and regularly writes resources for schools on natural hazards and environmental change. \n\nPaddy Rockett\, Head of Middle School Boarding\, Reed’s School \nPaddy Rockett is the Head of Middle School Boarding/Housemaster at Reed’s School in Surrey. Paddy has been through the Pastoral Care module and Boarding Management module run by the BSA and is currently completing his Masters in Residential Education with the University of Buckingham. His current area of research is focussed on the development of life skills in boarding houses and the development of a national programme for life skills development. \nPreviously\, Paddy was a lead in the “Broadening the Curriculum” strategy of the University of Limerick designing a social responsibility module undertaken by first year students. As a Biology teacher he is interested in the use of VR and AR in the teaching of Science. He is also in interested in Pastoral care\, the development of Boarding nationally and internationally and social mobility. \n\nGuy Schady-Beckett\, Director and Head of Research\, Next Step Education \nGuy has served as Director and Head of Research at Next Step Education Limited\n(Independent Schools Show & Bonas MacFarlane) since 2014. Previously he ran Drayson Beckett Limited\, a specialist education consultancy working long-term with schools and universities on business development (with a focus on digital\ntransition)\, market research and brand / product repositioning for 20 years. Prior to that he taught English at Windlesham and Durston House. He was previously Deputy Head at Gordon’s School in Surrey\, and Assistant Head at Steyning Grammar School in West Sussex\, both state boarding schools. Prior to a 12 year spell in the state boarding sector\, Rob was a Housemaster and Head of Faculty at Wycliffe College in Gloucestershire for 15 years. Graduating from Durham University\, Rob spend a few years living and working in Japan before returning to the UK to start his teaching career. He continues to enjoy his love of sport and of the great outdoors in general\, having built an impressive surfing and Outdoor Education programme at Kingsley School.

This makes “Managing Difficult Conversations” with people whom we live and work with challenging. \nWhat does ‘difficult’ mean? \nOur brain is our own central computer that takes in information from the world around us and gives that information meaning. Her business is training and coaching leaders and managers in the education sector. \nWith over 30 years of experience\, she has trained thousands of managers\, team leaders\, and supervisors. \nEvery part of growing up\,  at school and in Tracy-Anne’s early career\, was influenced by people who ‘believed’ in her. Without these people giving her a chance\, believing in her ability\, and supporting her progression\, she would not have developed into the person she is today. \nShe firmly believes that if you reach for the stars and work hard\, your background does not need to hold you back.
