From 2007 to 2012\, she was Senior Mistress and Head of Geography at Malvern College\, before taking on a new role as Deputy Head of Malvern College Qingdao\, China in 2012 and then Head in 2014. More recently\, Lorraine was Principal of Padworth College following her time as Principal of Bishopstrow College. \n  \nPeter Fisher\, Senior Deputy Head & Head of Boarding\, Westbourne House School \nPeter has a career spanning just shy of 25 years in education with 20 of those years working within boarding schools. He is currently the Senior Deputy Head and Head of Boarding at Westbourne House School \nPeter brings 15 years senior leadership experience in both the prep and senior school contexts to TIOB. He is a theologian by trade and feels as passionately about teaching and learning as he did when he felt called to teach back in 1998. \nPeter is a mentor for undergraduates of Homerton College (Homerton Changemakers (cam.ac.uk)) and has been since the initiative began. In his spare time\, Peter edits (for the reader in English from Italian) a theological/philosophical academic journal. SUMMARY:Prep School: Juggling the demands of the flexi boarder

This session is focussed on boarding staff in prep schools but equally applicable to those in a senior school\nPlatform: Zoom (online)\n\n\nBoarding school staff must carefully balance the needs and schedules of both flexi boarders and full boarders. \nFlexi boarders\, who may only stay on campus a few nights a week\, may require less supervision and structure than full boarders\, who live on campus full-time. To accommodate both types of students\, staff may need to be flexible with scheduling and have different levels of supervision for each group. Additionally\, they may need to create separate spaces or activities for flexi boarders to ensure they have a sense of belonging and connection to the school community. \nCommunication with both students and their families is also important to ensure everyone is on the same page and expectations are clear. For house parents\, the challenges will involve the logistics of flexi boarding management in relation to booking systems and staffing. For the school and the boarding house\, the important questions will be identifying why pupils’ flexi-board and how\, as a boarding community\, we embrace the growing demand.  \nLearning Outcomes: \n\nTo develop a robust system of registering flexi boarders\nTo develop an induction process for flexi boarders in line with NMS (National Minimum Standards)\nCreating a stable environment for full boarders with little disruption from flexi-boarders\nIdentifying the logistics caused by flexi-boarding that need to be resolved.\n\nDelegates will leave the session with a range of techniques to plan flexi boarding logistics\, enabling the boarding team to become more efficient in planning and organisation. William is passionate about a skills and mindset based learning philosophy; has a background in emotional wellbeing and mental health; and strongly believes in the value of learning outside the classroom. He is a founding fellow of the Chartered College of Teaching; fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts; and has a Masters in Learning and Teaching from the University of Oxford. \n\nJill Berry\, Leadership Development Consultant\, J Berry Associates Ltd  \nJill taught for thirty years across six different schools in the UK\, state and independent\, and she taught adults to GCSE and A level in the evenings for several years. She was a head for the last ten years of her time in schools. Since 2010 she has completed a doctorate\, researching the transition to headship and written a book about it: ‘Making the Leap – Moving from Deputy to Head’ (Crown House\, 2016) (also now available as an audio book); and carried out an extensive range of leadership development work. Leading sport programmes at Woodbridge and Trent College precipitated a move into Shuker House as Housemaster in 2004 and a first connection with BSA. As a BSA certificate graduate\, certificate tutor\, diploma tutor\, conference convener and consultant\, Chris has worked with BSA ever since. Over that time Chris took the leadership of the boarding community at Licensed Victuallers’ Ascot before becoming Deputy Head at Millfield. A move to Thailand in 2017 to become Principal of Shrewsbury International School Bangkok proved wonderfully immersive and now Chris leads the Senior School at the region’s oldest international school\, Tanglin Trust Singapore. Having now experienced culture shock on two occasions and gained a new perspective on the role of boarding in the UK for overseas students\, Chris is continuing to learn about the international market and implications for the UK. \n\nCrispin Dawson\, Principal\, Padworth College formerly Founding Principal\, Cheltenham College Muscat \nCrispin has been both a Head of Department and a Housemaster in UK Boarding schools. He was Senior Deputy Head at Cheltenham College and set up Cheltenham’s first overseas school in Muscat\, Oman. The school opened with 312 pupils\, against a projected number of 180. This session looks at a variety of ways in which you can be innovative in finding and keeping members of your boarding team and retain them. \n\nSpeaker:\n\nSpeaker: Paul Kilbride\, Headmaster\,  Old Swinford Hospital\n\n\n\n\nLouise Bennett\, CEO\, IDPE \nLouise is Joint-CEO of The Institute of Development Professionals in Education (IDPE)\, the ‘goto’ organisation for all those involved with fundraising and engagement in schools. Louise is\nresponsible for developing training\, support and resources to support schools’ fundraising\, and champions the impact of schools’ development on providing the best educational\nexperiences for young people. \nLouise has over 20 years’ experience of working across fundraising disciplines\, and has previously held senior fundraising roles at The Stroke Association and Shelter Cymru. Louise has also volunteered for a number of organisations\, from being Chair of Trustees for Cardiff Women’s Aid to being a Board member for the Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA)\nand more recently\, supporting the PTA at her children’s primary school. \nLouise is passionate about fundraising\, and as such has found herself hiking across Iceland\, running a marathon and cycling from Cardiff to Dublin\, to raise money for good causes. \n\n \nSophie Langdale\, Director of Admissions and Communications\, Radley College \nSophie joined Radley College in September 2020 from Wycombe Abbey\, a girls’ boarding school\, where she was Director of Admissions. Prior to that Sophie was Director of Admissions and External Relations at Magdalen College School\, Oxford for nearly a decade. Having read Classics and played a lot of lacrosse at Durham University\, Sophie’s early career spanned fifteen years in finance and broadcast journalism at Sky News. \n\nPaul Kilbride\, Headmaster\,  Old Swinford Hospital \nPaul Kilbride is the nineteenth headmaster of Old Swinford Hospital. He studied at a British Army school in Germany before returning to university in England to read Modern History at Magdalen College\, Oxford. Paul trained as a teacher in Birmingham and has worked in both the maintained and independent sectors\, holding positions including Head of Department\, Director of Sixth Form and Deputy Head. He has an MA in Education from UCL and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. His teaching experience includes single sex\, boarding\, selective and non-selective schools and he has served as governor both at secondary and primary level. Hannah is passionate about supporting young people\, and the adults around them\, to have the best possible mental health outcomes.  \n\nJonathan Charlesworth M.Ed.\, Executive Director\, Educational Action Challenging Homophobia (EACH) \nJonathan Charlesworth is the Executive Director of Educational Action Challenging Homophobia.  He has extensive knowledge and understanding of LGBT+ people’s experiences acquired across thirty-six years’ practice in teaching\, training\, consultancy\, Helpline management and books’ authorship.  Jonathan’s been commissioned multiple times by the Department for Education and the Welsh Government to generate guidances and create training for schools nationally (including statutory anti-bullying guidance for Welsh schools). He’s the author of two books on how schools can challenge homophobic bullying and his training and consultancy work has been commissioned by the USA\, Finland\, Sweden and throughout the UK. \n\nEmma Millo\, Housemistress\, Haileybury College \nAfter first studying psychology at Durham University Emma then studied for an MSc in physiotherapy at the University of Essex and worked with professional sports teams such as the All Blacks and at London 2012. She then moved into a career teaching psychology. Emma has worked at Haileybury College in Hertfordshire for the past 10 years and is currently a Housemistress of a seniors girls house. Emma is currently studying for an MSc in Mental Heath in Children and Young People at Edinburgh University. Through her studies and work she has developed a passion for pupil wellbeing and is interested in how we can enhance this through proactive strategies. \n\nSimon Porter\, Head of Boarding\, Clayesmore Prep School\n \nSimon has a wealth of experience in pastoral and wellbeing matters\, having worked at some of the country’s top prep boarding schools. In addition to this\, he is currently completing a masters in educational leadership. He is passionate about helping children to prioritise their wellbeing in the challenging society they live in\, focusing especially on early identification of issues and how to resolve them before they start to have adverse effects on children’s lives. \nAway from his current role of Head of Boarding\, he is a highly sought after sports coach\, where he has elite experience heading up the training\, support and development of county level cricketers\, guiding them in both physical and psychological areas. Prior to joining the BSA\, Gaelle was Deputy Head Pastoral\, DSL and Head of Boarding at an all-girls independent school in the South-East. \n  \n  \n\nChris Wheeler\, Chair\, TIOB and Principal\, Monkton Combe School \nChris Wheeler has been Principal of Monkton Comb in Bath since January 2016. He was elected Vice Chair of HMC for 2019-20 and has served on HMC’s Inspection Sub Committee. He previously served as Principal and CEO at Hillcrest International Schools in Kenya\, Headmaster at St Christopher’s\, Hove\, and has variously been Deputy Head\, Housemaster (day and boarding) and Head of English. \nIn addition to his work at HMC\, he is an ISI Team Inspector and a trustee of the Lywood Colley Academy Trust. He has previously served as a Trustee with the Palladian Academy Trust\, a member of the Court of the University of Bath\, an examiner at GCSE and A-level for both English and Literature and often speaks at churches and chapels across the country. \n\nAisha Thomas\, Director\, Representation Matters Ltd \nAisha is a born and bred Bristolian. She studied law at the University of the West of England before transitioning to education in 2010. In September 2016\, Aisha became an Assistant Principal at an inner-city secondary school in Bristol. She is also an educational activist specialising in race and anti-racist practice. \nAfter transitioning to education\, she has completed the national qualification for senior leaders (NPQSL)\, Roehampton University Level 6 Certificate of professional development in PSHE\, Foundation for Educational Leadership\, Leading with moral purpose and the CLF Diversity Leadership Programme. \nIn 2018 Aisha presented a BBC documentary about the lack of black teachers in Bristol and collaborated with city partners to launch the ‘One Bristol Curriculum’. This aimed to create a more equitable representation of black history\, achievement\, and culture in Bristol as well as Britain and globally. \n2019 saw Aisha deliver her TEDx Bristol talk\, ‘Why representation really matters‘. In a world where many people do not see themselves recognised in all aspects of life\, Aisha wanted to reignite the debate and challenged education and industry to look at their practice. \n\nKate Hollyer\, Legal and Public Affairs Director\, BSA Group & Director\, BSA Group Legal Services Ltd \nKate is Legal Director of BSA Group and Director of BSA Legal Services Ltd. As a qualified solicitor with more than 10 years’ experience advising clients on UK immigration law\, Kate assists members with all immigration and safeguarding legal matters. Prior to joining BSA in 2022 Kate was Partner and Head of Department at a leading full-service UK law firm. Having resided in state\, preparatory and senior school boarding houses since 2014 with her Housemaster husband\, Kate has a unique perspective of boarding life. \n\n \nDale Wilkins\, Senior Director\, BSA Group \nDale joined the BSA during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards. In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s accredited training programme. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter\, the Annual Safeguarding conference\, and the Safeguarding Forum. He has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our overseas members. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board and has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding since 2002. Dale had previously been a BSA course tutor since 1998 and developed the BSA Self-Assessment Toolkit. \n\n \nKrissy Scott\, Partner\, Harrison Clark Rickerbys \nEducation is such an important part of everyday life and Krissy uses her expertise to focus on issues relating to staff\, pupils and parents to allow schools to keep teaching and learning as a priority. \nKrissy is trusted to support educational establishments of all types\, from independent schools and grammar schools to colleges with sensitive issues such as child protection\, pupil exclusions and parental complaints. Working collaboratively with schools\, engaging with them beyond pragmatic legal advice\, Krissy sees herself as an extension to the school team. \nSafeguarding and child protection are vital\, creating safer systems in schools and pupil and staff wellbeing. Krissy also helps schools when allegations of abuse are made against staff\, including support on multi-agency working and the duty to report and refer to the appropriate authorities; she is also a safeguarding link governor at a large senior school. \nThe quality of Krissy’s work is recognised in the legal directories – delighted clients have said “the quality of her response is great\, as it is always right first time\, and she is great to deal with on a personal level.” Sharing her expertise\, Krissy regularly speaks at national education sector events and provides training to clients on difficult pastoral issues. \n\nWill Chuter\, Head\, Cranbrook  \nWill started his teaching career in 2005\, following a stint in publishing in London. Will is a passionate advocate of boarding and state boarding schools. \n  \n\n \nEmilie Darwin\, Director of Membership Services\, IAPS \nEmilie is a very experienced Cheltenham lawyer with an in depth knowledge of the independent school sector. Emilie has previously spent some time on secondment with the Independent Schools Council (ISC). Emilie provides advice and help to IAPS members in all school operations including marketing\, recruitment\, legal\, safeguarding and associated matters. \n\nDr Claudia Bernard\, Professor of Social Work\, Department  of Social\, Therapeutic and Community Studies  \nProfessor Claudia Bernard is an experienced researcher\, academic and author who has worked in the practice\, policy\, and academic fields for several decades. She has a background in social work and her research interests lie in the areas of social work with children and families\, child abuse and neglect\, and social equalities. She has written widely on these topics\, including a book entitled Constructing Lived Experiences: Representations of Black Mothers in Child Sexual Abuse Discourses (2nd Edition\, Routledge\, 2017)\, and an edited collection entitled Safeguarding Black Children: Good Practice in Child Protection (Jessica Kingsley Publishers\, 2016). Her latest book  Intersectionality for Social Workers: A Practical Introduction to Theory and Practice (2022) is published by Routledge. Professor Bernard also has broad experience of knowledge exchange and working in partnership with a number of public sector organisations\, most recently\, the City of London Corporation\, to deliver a programme of research on safeguarding children in affluent families. He was Head of Design Technology at Pangbourne College\, as well as Houseparent and Head of Boarding\, before moving to Merchiston Castle School to continue as a Houseparent and then more recently taking on the role of Assistant Head (Pupil Support). As well as having a lead and overview of the school’s pastoral support and structures\, he is responsible for Merchiston’s Rights Respecting journey towards Gold accreditation. \nWhen he is not at school\, Will enjoys his hobby of singing\, having sung soloist for the London Welsh Male Voice Choir; he is now an active member of the Voice of the Town\, Edinburgh. \n\nPaddy Rockett\, Head of Middle School Boarding\, Reed’s School \nPaddy Rockett is the Head of Middle School Boarding/Housemaster at Reed’s School in Surrey. Paddy has been through the Pastoral Care modules and Boarding Management modules run by the BSA and is currently completing his masters in Residential Education with the University of Buckingham. His current area of research is focussed on the development of life skills in boarding houses and the development a national programme for life skills development. Previously\, Paddy was a lead  in the “Broadening the Curriculum” strategy of the University of Limerick designing a social responsibility module undertaken by first year students. As a Biology teacher he is interested in the use of VR and AR in the teaching of Science. He is also in interested in Pastoral care\, the development of Boarding nationally and internationally and social mobility. \n  \n\nHenry Stoot\, Head of Boarding and Compliance\, Bedales School \nHenry Stoot started his career in boarding in his first role after graduating from university. Since then\, Henry has gone on to be a Head of Department (Geography) and then Housemaster at Milton Abbey School in Dorset. In 2020\, Henry moved to Bedales School in Hampshire to take on the role of Head of Boarding and Compliance. In his current role\, Henry is responsible for the leadership and development of boarding\, with a particular focus on supporting overseas students and compliance towards the National Minimum Standards. Having boarded himself at Sherborne School in Dorset\, Henry is a strong advocate of boarding schools\, and all they do to support and nurture students through the turbulence of adolescence. Henry is also completing an MEd in Educational Leadership and Management\, and is due to graduate in March 2024. \n\nGrant Muirhead\, Deputy Headmaster and Director of Boarding\, Whanganui Collegiate School \nGrant has over 30 years’ experience as a teacher in a variety of schools throughout New Zealand. In the last sixteen years Grant has worked at Whanganui Collegiate School which is one of New Zealand’s leading boarding schools. Grant was a Housemaster for 8 years and then was appointed as Deputy Headmaster. One of the focuses in this role has been reviewing boarding in terms of the Duty of Care and collaboratively working to make boarding at Whanganui Collegiate School a fulfilling experience for both staff and students. This has led to Grant developing and implementing the ACTIVE approach which will be the subject of his presentation at this conference. \nGrant is married to Karin and together they have two children\, Joe who works in IT in Melbourne and Rosie who is a teacher in Auckland. Grant was a keen cricketer and runner but now enjoys keeping fit at the gym\, and the challenges of being a Leeds United fan. \n\nMarie West\, Head of Boarding at St George’s International School in Switzerland \nMrs Marie West is Head of Boarding at St George’s International School in Switzerland. She is a French native speaker and completed her degree in English Literature and Civilisation at the Université Occidentale de Bretagne in France\, before pursuing her studies in Swansea Metropolitan University in Wales\, where she completed her French Teaching qualification. She worked in teaching and in boarding in the UK for over 10 years and was Head of Boarding at Loughborough Amherst School in the UK for the last 3 years\, before joining St George’s in August 2022. In her free time\, she enjoys skiing\, walking Poppy the dog and of course spending time with her family. \n  \n\nAugusta Faulkner\, Head of Boarding\, Dragon School \nAugusta is Head of PSHE at the Dragon School\, having taught in two Prep schools\, Caldicott and the Dragon. Her teaching and pastoral experience is with Prep school age children and she is a mother to three teenagers\, two of which are at boarding schools\, and one at university. Together with her husband\, she ran a Junior and Senior boarding house for 15 years. More recently\, she took on the role of Joint Heads of Boarding at the Dragon\, leading a team of nine sets of Houseparents\, Dorms Takers and Boarding Assistants looking after 300 Dragon Boarders.

As we approach the holidays\, it is imperative to get that rest and recuperation ready for the onslaught of the Autumn term.  This event will explore how to set boundaries on your time\, manage expectations\, and protect yourself and your family so that you can provide outstanding pastoral care to the pupils in your boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. This has been enhanced through her experience teaching at a Microsoft Showcase School using technology alongside excellent teaching to provide students with rigour\, flexibility and detailed feedback to drive their progress. Victoria is very excited to be returning to the UK to take up the post of Head at Ruthin School. \n\nDale McMorran\, Head of Boarding\, Wymondham College \nDale joined Wymondham College in 2005 as second in English and leader of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme.  It is here that he first experienced boarding\, working two nights a week in Lincoln.  After supporting Dr Jones in Fry Hall for five years as his Deputy\, Dale became Head of Kett Hall in 2012\, a position which gave him\, in his own words\, “the best job in the world”.  In 2016 Dale joined the Senior Team directing the quality assurance processes in the College and in 2018 he became Deputy Headteacher responsible for Boarding and Behaviour.  Teaching English remains a highlight of any day\, and Dale notes a personal triumph being awarded a National Teaching Award in the summer of 2018.  Dale is enthused by his family\, films and cinema\, his bookshelf\, his sporting rackets and his unique golf swing.  Two lifelong dreams\, to travel in space and to drive the ‘A Team’ van\, remain very much alive. \nBOOK NOW

There is so much TIOB members can learn from each other\, and the forum might come in handy when making a decision about your next career move. \nBOOK NOW \nSpeakers: \nJake Albon\, Head of Boarding at Moulsford Prep \n \nJake graduated from Loughborough University with a sports coaching degree and has an IPGCE from the University of Buckingham. He has been a teacher at Moulsford Prep school for nine years\, of which the last eight have been in boarding. Jake took over as Head of Boarding in September 2022. He teaches PE\, ICT & Games. \nMarcus Carter\, Head of Boarding at Handcross Park \n \nMarcus graduated from Cardiff University with an English Language degree and has a PGCE from the University of Brighton. Since then\, he has also completed a Masters in Education and achieved a BSA Advanced Certificate in Pastoral Care and Boarding Management. Marcus has taught at Handcross Park since 2017\, in a variety of roles\, but currently teaches English and Games. He was appointed Head of Boarding in September 2022 and experienced an ISI inspection within his first few months in post. \nRebecca Jarrett\, Head of Boarding at Marlborough College Malaysia \n \nRebecca entered teaching after completing her MA in Biological Anthropology at Cambridge and her PGCE at Oxford. She was Assistant Boarding Housemistress at Wellington College before taking over her own mixed\, sixth form boarding house at LVS Ascot in 2014. She and her husband Tom have both worked closely with BSA\, and she has enjoyed writing some of their briefing papers\, magazine articles and delivering seminars. In 2019 the family moved to Malaysia where Rebecca took over a senior girls boarding house at Marlborough College just as the pandemic struck! She continues in her role as Housemistress and was recently appointed Head of Boarding. \nRebecca represented Cambridge at lacrosse and hockey\, and has coached school hockey\, netball and rounders as well as running a variety of activities including a dissection club and teaching art. She has completed several marathons\, climbed Kilimanjaro and loves travelling\, with a particular passion for Africa. She and Tom have three children and since moving to Malaysia the family have enjoyed extensive travels in South East Asia. \nMairion Goodman\, Head of Coaching at Monkton Combe School \n \nMairion has a fairly unusual journey into boarding! She graduated from Leeds University with Joint Hons English & French. She then trained for ordination in the Anglican church\, adding a degree in Applied Theology along the way. She spent 10 years working in a church in Bristol before starting the adventure of working in boarding. She has looked after a girls’ house at Monkton Combe School\, caring for a mixture of boarders and day pupils since 2015. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Fellow of the Institute of Boarding. \n  \n\nDay 2 – Managing difficult conversations \nIt would be great if\, in life\, we only ever met people that we liked\, enjoyed being with\, and found easy to get along with. \nUnfortunately\, this is not the case. People are different. Some are like us\, and some are very different. \nThese differences can sometimes make relationships difficult\, and this in turn can affect how we feel\, and what we do. This makes “Managing Difficult Conversations” with people whom we live and work with challenging. \nWhat does ‘difficult’ mean? \nOur brain is our own central computer that takes in information from the world around us and gives that information meaning. However\, different people interpret events and information differently. We don’t all see the same thing in the same way. From data tasks to in-tray exercises to common questions and presentations\, part 2 of our conference will provide you with examples\, hints and tips to maximise your chances. \nSpeaker: \nJo Cameron- Principal\, Queenswood School  \nJo Cameron has been Principal of Queenswood School since 2016\, having previously worked as Deputy Head at Ipswich High School for Girls. \nA graduate of the University of Surrey (St Mary’s College) with an honours degree in \nEnvironmental Science\, for the past 23 years Mrs Cameron has worked almost exclusively in \nall girls’ schools. She began her teaching career as a Science teacher specialising in Biology at St Mary’s\, Wantage\, where she quickly progressed to become Head of the Science Department. She has a deep understanding and appreciation of the unique opportunities that single sex education offers\, and is firmly of the belief that ‘happy girls are successful girls’. \nBeyond the classroom\, in her spare time Mrs Cameron is a keen sportswoman\, with a passion for hockey\, running and equestrianism. \nWill Chuter\, Headmaster\, Kimbolton School \nHe started his teaching career in 2005\, following a stint in publishing in London. He teaches Classics\, was Head of Department and Housemaster at Uppingham\, then Deputy Head Pastoral at Gresham’s\, and took on the Headship of Cranbrook in January 2021. He is a passionate advocate of boarding and state boarding schools. \nHe has been the Headmaster of Kimbolton School since September 2023. \nMartin Reader- Headmaster\, Cranleigh School \nMartin Reader is currently Head of Cranleigh School. He began his teaching career at St Edward’s Oxford\, before moving to Oundle School and then to Reigate Grammar School where he was Senior Deputy Head. Prior to moving to Cranleigh\, he was Headmaster of Wellington School\, Somerset for eight years. Passionate about boarding\, he served as Chair of the BSA in 2018\, and Vice Chair in 2017 and 2019. He is also a trustee of the BSA Foundation and the Hawk and Owl Trust. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Fellow of the Institute of Boarding. \n  \n\nDay 2 – Managing difficult conversations \nIt would be great if\, in life\, we only ever met people that we liked\, enjoyed being with\, and found easy to get along with. \nUnfortunately\, this is not the case. People are different. Some are like us\, and some are very different. \nThese differences can sometimes make relationships difficult\, and this in turn can affect how we feel\, and what we do. This makes “Managing Difficult Conversations” with people whom we live and work with challenging. \nWhat does ‘difficult’ mean? \nOur brain is our own central computer that takes in information from the world around us and gives that information meaning. However\, different people interpret events and information differently. We don’t all see the same thing in the same way. This session will provide some insights into how and why Mastering the art of Difficult Conversations is important.\nIn particular\, by the end of the session you will be able to:\n• Understand the types of difficult conversations\n• Identify the impact of non-action\n• Understand the pitfalls when managing a difficult conversation\n• Identify key aspects that drive behaviour\n• Understand the approaches for different characters\n• Identify the steps to help you Master Difficult Conversations \nThe session will be interactive\, including some group activities and discussions. \nSpeaker: \nTracy-Anne Barker \nTracy-Anne is a UK-based former director\, senior manager\, and lead for commercial\, public\, and charity sector organisations. Her business is a training and coaching consultancy. \nWith over 30 years in construction\, retail\, hospitality\, recruitment\, education\, supply chain\, international trade\, and public and charity sectors she has trained thousands of managers\, team leaders\, supervisors and charge hands. \nEvery part of growing up;  at school and in Tracy-Anne’s early career was influenced by people who ‘believed’ in her. Without these people giving her a chance\, taking faith in her ability\, and supporting her progression she would not have developed into the person she is today. \nShe has a strong belief\, that if you reach for the stars and you work hard your background does not need to hold you back. She is a former Head of BSA boarding schools\, and a former Vice-Chair of ISC\, who held national and international roles in education in the UK and Australia until 2014; she was President of GSA in 2011\, and Tatler’s Best Head of a Public School in the same year. \nAfter her successful executive leadership career in secondary and K-12 education in the UK and internationally\, Helen has devoted herself since 2014 to governance\, recruitment\, coaching and consultancy\, working with school leaders across the world; she also chairs and contributes to a number of educational Boards in the UK and internationally. \nOften described by her leadership coachees as warm\, independent and incisive (and demanding!)\, with a visionary yet pragmatic approach\, Helen enjoys challenging individuals and supporting them in their career growth.
