DESCRIPTION:Date: May 22\, 2023\nTime: 11:30 – 13:30\nCost: Member Rate – £195 / Non-member Rate – £390\nAudience: Anyone who works in boarding who has a desire to be the best they possibly can be.\nPlatform: Zoom (online)\n\n\nTo accommodate the busy schedules of TIOB members\, we have decided to restructure the TIOB Boarding leadership conference and split the day into three sessions across three separate dates. \n\n13th March: 10.30am-12.30pm : Effective ways to develop you and your boarding team followed by Authentic Leadership\n22nd May 11.30am-1.30pm: Marketing and Development followed by Recruiting and Retaining boarding staff\n16th June 11.30am-1.30pm: Strategic management of boarding followed by Crisis management case studies.\n\nShould you not be able to attend all three dates\, all sessions will be recorded and made available to delegates. \nThis conference promises to ensure that individuals in boarding can reflect on their performance in a range of spheres within their role. You will be presented with a range of perspectives\, support and inspiration from experts in the field. By the end of the conference\, you should be able to evaluate and develop a strategic plan allowing you to be more effective and focused in your role. \nLearning outcomes: \nDelegates will: \n\nHave the opportunity to consider their position on their boarding journey and consider how to review and act upon current best practice\nHave up to date knowledge on themes relating to how they can achieve the best possible personal outcomes\nTake away learning and ideas on how to motivate themselves and team members.\n\nProgramme: \n11:30 – 12:30 Supporting marketing and development \nAny position in boarding requires an individual to have the ability to have a rapport and empathy with the young people in their care. However\, the role of houseparent is so much more than the pastoral care of the pupils in your house. This session identifies how in the you can support the marketing team in selling and promoting boarding in your school. \nThis session will require you to reflect on your own strengths and weaknesses and how to develop strategies to enhance your confidence and skill in promoting yourself and your house. \n\nSpeakers:\n\nLouise Bennett\, CEO\, IDPE\nSophie Langdale\, Director of Admissions and Communications\, Radley College\n\n\n\n12:30 – 13:30 Recruiting and retaining boarding staff \nRecruiting and retaining staff in a 24/7 boarding environment has never been more difficult. This session looks at a variety of ways in which you can be innovative in finding and keeping members of your boarding team and retain them. \n\nSpeaker:\n\nSpeaker: Paul Kilbride\, Headmaster\,  Old Swinford Hospital\n\n\n\n\nLouise Bennett\, CEO\, IDPE \nLouise is Joint-CEO of The Institute of Development Professionals in Education (IDPE)\, the ‘goto’ organisation for all those involved with fundraising and engagement in schools. Louise is\nresponsible for developing training\, support and resources to support schools’ fundraising\, and champions the impact of schools’ development on providing the best educational\nexperiences for young people. \nLouise has over 20 years’ experience of working across fundraising disciplines\, and has previously held senior fundraising roles at The Stroke Association and Shelter Cymru. Louise has also volunteered for a number of organisations\, from being Chair of Trustees for Cardiff Women’s Aid to being a Board member for the Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA)\nand more recently\, supporting the PTA at her children’s primary school. \nLouise is passionate about fundraising\, and as such has found herself hiking across Iceland\, running a marathon and cycling from Cardiff to Dublin\, to raise money for good causes. \n\n \nSophie Langdale\, Director of Admissions and Communications\, Radley College \nSophie joined Radley College in September 2020 from Wycombe Abbey\, a girls’ boarding school\, where she was Director of Admissions. Prior to that Sophie was Director of Admissions and External Relations at Magdalen College School\, Oxford for nearly a decade. Having read Classics and played a lot of lacrosse at Durham University\, Sophie’s early career spanned fifteen years in finance and broadcast journalism at Sky News. \n\nPaul Kilbride\, Headmaster\,  Old Swinford Hospital \nPaul Kilbride is the nineteenth headmaster of Old Swinford Hospital. He studied at a British Army school in Germany before returning to university in England to read Modern History at Magdalen College\, Oxford. Paul trained as a teacher in Birmingham and has worked in both the maintained and independent sectors\, holding positions including Head of Department\, Director of Sixth Form and Deputy Head. He has an MA in Education from UCL and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. His teaching experience includes single sex\, boarding\, selective and non-selective schools and he has served as governor both at secondary and primary level. Reading English Language and Literature at Christ Church\, Oxford\, she became an Oxford Union debater and toured the United States as English-Speaking Union debating scholar in 1990\, during a gap year. \nThinking she would teach just for a year before deciding what to do with her life\, she fell in love with the classroom and has never looked back. An eclectic career has included appointments at James Allen’s Girls’ School\, a spell in Japan where she lectured at Kobe Kaisei Women’s College and Kobe University\, raising her two sons\, taking a master’s degree in Inclusive Education at the Open University\, and teaching at King Edward’s\, Southampton. \nFour years in the English Department at Radley College\, where she became Head of English and served as a sub-tutor in E Social\, were followed by Deputy Headship at More House School\, Frensham. From 2011\, she was Head of Duke of Kent School in Ewhurst\, Surrey\, and she joined Milton Abbey as Head in September 2018. \nJudith is married to Gregory\, a military historian and lecturer at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Their sons\, William and Edward\, studied at UCL and Glasgow.  An ideal day out for Judith\, who is a keen supporter of the arts\, might include a visit to the V&A\, a very long lunch with friends and family\, and an evening at the National Theatre. However\, she would be just as happy to take a long walk in the Dorset countryside with her border terrier\, Ruby. \n\nMcKenzie Cerri\, Co-founder\, Graydin \nMcKenzie Cerri is a co-founder of Graydin\, an organisation working to revolutionise the ways we support\, empower and connect with our next generations through coaching skills. Together with more than 250 schools and thousands of educators world-wide\, Graydin has been at the forefront of the coaching movement in education since 2011. \nMcKenzie has over 20 years of experience in coaching and teacher training\, having delivered hundreds of coaching workshops and courses to thousands of educators. She is a Co-active Coach\, a Certificated Practitioner of NLP\, and a Mytho Facilitator. Prior to Graydin\, she worked as a youth coach within the public sector and partnered closely with Maudsley Hospital eating disorder unit to bring a coaching approach to carer support. Born in California\, now based in East Sussex\, she took her first personal development course at age nine. \n\n \nRobin Fletcher\, CEO\, BSA and BSA Group \nRobin Fletcher is CEO of BSA Group\, comprising BAISIS (British Association of Independent Schools with International Students)\, BSA (Boarding Schools’ Association)\, BSA Legal\, HIEDA (Health in Education Association) SACPA (Safeguarding and Child Protection Association) and TIOB (The Institute of Boarding). A former journalist\, editor and communications director\, Robin is a non-executive director of the manufacturers’ trade body Make UK\, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and an Honorary Fellow of Cardiff Metropolitan University. \n\nHannah Kinsey\, Head of Training & Service Design\, YoungMinds \nHannah is Head of Training and Service Design at YoungMinds and has been with the charity for 8 years. Hannah’s team work to equip trusted adults with the tools they need to support young people’s mental health and champion the meaningful participation of young people in the services that are there to help them. \nHannah has over 15 years of experience in the young people’s charity sector having worked for the National Youth Advocacy Service\, ChildLine\, NSPCC\, Kidscape and Parliament’s Education Service. Hannah is passionate about supporting young people\, and the adults around them\, to have the best possible mental health outcomes.  \n\nJonathan Charlesworth M.Ed.\, Executive Director\, Educational Action Challenging Homophobia (EACH) \nJonathan Charlesworth is the Executive Director of Educational Action Challenging Homophobia.  He has extensive knowledge and understanding of LGBT+ people’s experiences acquired across thirty-six years’ practice in teaching\, training\, consultancy\, Helpline management and books’ authorship.  Jonathan’s been commissioned multiple times by the Department for Education and the Welsh Government to generate guidances and create training for schools nationally (including statutory anti-bullying guidance for Welsh schools). He’s the author of two books on how schools can challenge homophobic bullying and his training and consultancy work has been commissioned by the USA\, Finland\, Sweden and throughout the UK. \n\nEmma Millo\, Housemistress\, Haileybury College \nAfter first studying psychology at Durham University Emma then studied for an MSc in physiotherapy at the University of Essex and worked with professional sports teams such as the All Blacks and at London 2012. She then moved into a career teaching psychology. Emma has worked at Haileybury College in Hertfordshire for the past 10 years and is currently a Housemistress of a seniors girls house. Emma is currently studying for an MSc in Mental Heath in Children and Young People at Edinburgh University. Through her studies and work she has developed a passion for pupil wellbeing and is interested in how we can enhance this through proactive strategies. \n\nSimon Porter\, Head of Boarding\, Clayesmore Prep School\n \nSimon has a wealth of experience in pastoral and wellbeing matters\, having worked at some of the country’s top prep boarding schools. In addition to this\, he is currently completing a masters in educational leadership. He is passionate about helping children to prioritise their wellbeing in the challenging society they live in\, focusing especially on early identification of issues and how to resolve them before they start to have adverse effects on children’s lives. \nAway from his current role of Head of Boarding\, he is a highly sought after sports coach\, where he has elite experience heading up the training\, support and development of county level cricketers\, guiding them in both physical and psychological areas. He is passionate about all sport\, recently completed his first ever half marathon\, raising funds for a local grass roots charity. \n\n \nGaelle Sullivan\, Director of Research Services and Inclusion\, and Director of TIOB \nGaelle is Director of Research Services and Inclusion\, and Director\, TIOB. She and joined the BSA in January 2023. She is an experienced senior leader and has worked in a range of state and independent schools. She is a qualified SENCO and holds a Masters Degree in Inclusive Education. Prior to joining the BSA\, Gaelle was Deputy Head Pastoral\, DSL and Head of Boarding at an all-girls independent school in the South-East. \n  \n  \n\nChris Wheeler\, Chair\, TIOB and Principal\, Monkton Combe School \nChris Wheeler has been Principal of Monkton Comb in Bath since January 2016. He was elected Vice Chair of HMC for 2019-20 and has served on HMC’s Inspection Sub Committee. He previously served as Principal and CEO at Hillcrest International Schools in Kenya\, Headmaster at St Christopher’s\, Hove\, and has variously been Deputy Head\, Housemaster (day and boarding) and Head of English. \nIn addition to his work at HMC\, he is an ISI Team Inspector and a trustee of the Lywood Colley Academy Trust. He has previously served as a Trustee with the Palladian Academy Trust\, a member of the Court of the University of Bath\, an examiner at GCSE and A-level for both English and Literature and often speaks at churches and chapels across the country. \n\nAisha Thomas\, Director\, Representation Matters Ltd \nAisha is a born and bred Bristolian. She studied law at the University of the West of England before transitioning to education in 2010. In September 2016\, Aisha became an Assistant Principal at an inner-city secondary school in Bristol. She is also an educational activist specialising in race and anti-racist practice. \nAfter transitioning to education\, she has completed the national qualification for senior leaders (NPQSL)\, Roehampton University Level 6 Certificate of professional development in PSHE\, Foundation for Educational Leadership\, Leading with moral purpose and the CLF Diversity Leadership Programme. \nIn 2018 Aisha presented a BBC documentary about the lack of black teachers in Bristol and collaborated with city partners to launch the ‘One Bristol Curriculum’. This aimed to create a more equitable representation of black history\, achievement\, and culture in Bristol as well as Britain and globally. \n2019 saw Aisha deliver her TEDx Bristol talk\, ‘Why representation really matters‘. In a world where many people do not see themselves recognised in all aspects of life\, Aisha wanted to reignite the debate and challenged education and industry to look at their practice. \n\nKate Hollyer\, Legal and Public Affairs Director\, BSA Group & Director\, BSA Group Legal Services Ltd \nKate is Legal Director of BSA Group and Director of BSA Legal Services Ltd. As a qualified solicitor with more than 10 years’ experience advising clients on UK immigration law\, Kate assists members with all immigration and safeguarding legal matters. Prior to joining BSA in 2022 Kate was Partner and Head of Department at a leading full-service UK law firm. Having resided in state\, preparatory and senior school boarding houses since 2014 with her Housemaster husband\, Kate has a unique perspective of boarding life. \n\n \nDale Wilkins\, Senior Director\, BSA Group \nDale joined the BSA during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards. In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s accredited training programme. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter\, the Annual Safeguarding conference\, and the Safeguarding Forum. He has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our overseas members. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board and has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding since 2002. Dale had previously been a BSA course tutor since 1998 and developed the BSA Self-Assessment Toolkit. \n\n \nKrissy Scott\, Partner\, Harrison Clark Rickerbys \nEducation is such an important part of everyday life and Krissy uses her expertise to focus on issues relating to staff\, pupils and parents to allow schools to keep teaching and learning as a priority. \nKrissy is trusted to support educational establishments of all types\, from independent schools and grammar schools to colleges with sensitive issues such as child protection\, pupil exclusions and parental complaints. Working collaboratively with schools\, engaging with them beyond pragmatic legal advice\, Krissy sees herself as an extension to the school team. \nSafeguarding and child protection are vital\, creating safer systems in schools and pupil and staff wellbeing. Krissy also helps schools when allegations of abuse are made against staff\, including support on multi-agency working and the duty to report and refer to the appropriate authorities; she is also a safeguarding link governor at a large senior school. \nThe quality of Krissy’s work is recognised in the legal directories – delighted clients have said “the quality of her response is great\, as it is always right first time\, and she is great to deal with on a personal level.” Sharing her expertise\, Krissy regularly speaks at national education sector events and provides training to clients on difficult pastoral issues. \n\nWill Chuter\, Head\, Cranbrook  \nWill started his teaching career in 2005\, following a stint in publishing in London. Will teaches Classics\, was Head of Department and Housemaster at Uppingham\, then Deputy Head Pastoral at Gresham’s\, before taking on Headship of Cranbrook in January 2021. Will is a passionate advocate of boarding and state boarding schools. \n  \n\n \nEmilie Darwin\, Director of Membership Services\, IAPS \nEmilie is a very experienced Cheltenham lawyer with an in depth knowledge of the independent school sector. Emilie has previously spent some time on secondment with the Independent Schools Council (ISC). Emilie provides advice and help to IAPS members in all school operations including marketing\, recruitment\, legal\, safeguarding and associated matters. \n\nDr Claudia Bernard\, Professor of Social Work\, Department  of Social\, Therapeutic and Community Studies  \nProfessor Claudia Bernard is an experienced researcher\, academic and author who has worked in the practice\, policy\, and academic fields for several decades. She has a background in social work and her research interests lie in the areas of social work with children and families\, child abuse and neglect\, and social equalities. He is also in interested in Pastoral care\, the development of Boarding nationally and internationally and social mobility. \n  \n\nHenry Stoot\, Head of Boarding and Compliance\, Bedales School \nHenry Stoot started his career in boarding in his first role after graduating from university. Since then\, Henry has gone on to be a Head of Department (Geography) and then Housemaster at Milton Abbey School in Dorset. In 2020\, Henry moved to Bedales School in Hampshire to take on the role of Head of Boarding and Compliance. In his current role\, Henry is responsible for the leadership and development of boarding\, with a particular focus on supporting overseas students and compliance towards the National Minimum Standards. Having boarded himself at Sherborne School in Dorset\, Henry is a strong advocate of boarding schools\, and all they do to support and nurture students through the turbulence of adolescence. Henry is also completing an MEd in Educational Leadership and Management\, and is due to graduate in March 2024. \n\nGrant Muirhead\, Deputy Headmaster and Director of Boarding\, Whanganui Collegiate School \nGrant has over 30 years’ experience as a teacher in a variety of schools throughout New Zealand. In the last sixteen years Grant has worked at Whanganui Collegiate School which is one of New Zealand’s leading boarding schools. Grant was a Housemaster for 8 years and then was appointed as Deputy Headmaster. One of the focuses in this role has been reviewing boarding in terms of the Duty of Care and collaboratively working to make boarding at Whanganui Collegiate School a fulfilling experience for both staff and students. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. Her first teaching job was at King’s College School\, Wimbledon teaching biology and chemistry\, heading the Royal Naval Combined Cadet Force and as Head of Stage Management. She moved to take up the post of Head of Science at St John’s College\, Southsea and then became a Deputy Head working in London\, Cardiff and Dubai. \nAs a life-long learner herself\, Victoria has been a Medical Student Selector for a Russel Group university\, qualified as a Chartered Educational Assessor and achieved a Certificate in School Management and Leadership from Harvard Graduate School of Education. Her passion in education is to provide a learning environment where each student’s experience is personalised and tailored to their specific areas of development\, using both stretch and support activities. This has been enhanced through her experience teaching at a Microsoft Showcase School using technology alongside excellent teaching to provide students with rigour\, flexibility and detailed feedback to drive their progress. Victoria is very excited to be returning to the UK to take up the post of Head at Ruthin School. \n\nDale McMorran\, Head of Boarding\, Wymondham College \nDale joined Wymondham College in 2005 as second in English and leader of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme.  It is here that he first experienced boarding\, working two nights a week in Lincoln.  After supporting Dr Jones in Fry Hall for five years as his Deputy\, Dale became Head of Kett Hall in 2012\, a position which gave him\, in his own words\, “the best job in the world”.  In 2016 Dale joined the Senior Team directing the quality assurance processes in the College and in 2018 he became Deputy Headteacher responsible for Boarding and Behaviour.  Teaching English remains a highlight of any day\, and Dale notes a personal triumph being awarded a National Teaching Award in the summer of 2018.  Dale is enthused by his family\, films and cinema\, his bookshelf\, his sporting rackets and his unique golf swing.  Two lifelong dreams\, to travel in space and to drive the ‘A Team’ van\, remain very much alive. \nBOOK NOW

He teaches PE\, ICT & Games. \nMarcus Carter\, Head of Boarding at Handcross Park \n \nMarcus graduated from Cardiff University with an English Language degree and has a PGCE from the University of Brighton. Since then\, he has also completed a Masters in Education and achieved a BSA Advanced Certificate in Pastoral Care and Boarding Management. Marcus has taught at Handcross Park since 2017\, in a variety of roles\, but currently teaches English and Games. He was appointed Head of Boarding in September 2022 and experienced an ISI inspection within his first few months in post. \nRebecca Jarrett\, Head of Boarding at Marlborough College Malaysia \n \nRebecca entered teaching after completing her MA in Biological Anthropology at Cambridge and her PGCE at Oxford. She was Assistant Boarding Housemistress at Wellington College before taking over her own mixed\, sixth form boarding house at LVS Ascot in 2014. She and her husband Tom have both worked closely with BSA\, and she has enjoyed writing some of their briefing papers\, magazine articles and delivering seminars. In 2019 the family moved to Malaysia where Rebecca took over a senior girls boarding house at Marlborough College just as the pandemic struck! She continues in her role as Housemistress and was recently appointed Head of Boarding. \nRebecca represented Cambridge at lacrosse and hockey\, and has coached school hockey\, netball and rounders as well as running a variety of activities including a dissection club and teaching art. She has completed several marathons\, climbed Kilimanjaro and loves travelling\, with a particular passion for Africa. She and Tom have three children and since moving to Malaysia the family have enjoyed extensive travels in South East Asia. \nMairion Goodman\, Head of Coaching at Monkton Combe School \n \nMairion has a fairly unusual journey into boarding! She graduated from Leeds University with Joint Hons English & French. She then trained for ordination in the Anglican church\, adding a degree in Applied Theology along the way. She spent 10 years working in a church in Bristol before starting the adventure of working in boarding. She has looked after a girls’ house at Monkton Combe School\, caring for a mixture of boarders and day pupils since 2015. She is Monkton’s Head of Coaching: training staff and pupils (and now parents as well!) in conversational coaching skills\, as part of the school vision to develop independent and reflective learners.

He then headed back to Oxford in 1999\, to become Head of History at St Edward’s School and then a Housemaster. While there\, he continued with his rugby refereeing\, coaching U16s rugby and U15s rowing\, and ran the naval section of the CCF. \nIn 2007\, Mark was appointed Deputy Headmaster and Head of Boarding at Felsted School in Essex\, where he maintained his coaching and teaching roles. It was from there\, in 2010\, that he headed north\, to take on the role of Headmaster at Ashville College in Harrogate\, an HMC co-educational day and boarding school with 870 pupils. He has been an ISI team inspector\, a school governor and Chair of the Boarding School’s Association and is now in his seventh year as Headmaster of Strathallan School. \nMark is married to music teacher Caroline\, and has two sons\, both now at university. In his spare time\, he enjoys wild camping in the Scottish islands and walking in the hills.

She followed those with a stint as Head of Boarding at Headington School before becoming Deputy Head (Pastoral) and DSL at King’s. She is currently trying to understand how so many years working in boarding have passed!

Using his personal and professional experiences\, he is now a resilience coach\, helping individuals and teams to achieve healthy high performance\, offering an understanding of the impact of resilient thoughts and resilient actions on overall levels of wellbeing. He is an accredited Workplace Resilience and Wellbeing Master Practitioner\, trained by the Wellbeing Project\, and has extensive experience as an educational consultant. \nIn 2020\, he founded Project 1000 Ltd\, a company that focuses on delivering coaching and consultancy. Andrew identified his key stress triggers and wanted to work for himself. He counted back 1000 days from his 55th birthday that happened to be World Mental Health Day and his future began! \nIn addition to his time as a Head\, he has also undertaken most roles within boarding\, including as a GAP student\, houseparent\, governor  and worked as Director of Training and then International Director for the BSA\, before becoming a BSA Senior Consultant. \nIn this webinar\, Andrew will not only share his personal experiences but he will offer some opportunities to find solutions that just might help to make the difference to those struggling to achieve that life / work balance that can be so difficult in a boarding environment. He is working with the BSA to provide that additional support to practitioners who might need it. He wishes he knew then what he knows now! \nStandard 11.4 of the National Minimum Standards for Boarding (September 5 2022) ensures that\, ‘The school identifies at least one person other than a parent\, outside the staff\, and those responsible for the leadership and governance of the school\, who children may contact directly about personal problems or concerns at the school. This person may be known as the ‘independent person’. Children know who this person is\, know how to contact them and feel comfortable talking to them. His broad remit offers a range of services to boarding schools worldwide. He has overall responsibility for the financial and operational life of the College\, and the management of all non-teaching staff.\nAfter Newcastle Royal Grammar School\, Andrew studied chemistry at Oxford and moved into the banking sector\, rising to become Director of Strategy\, Performance and Client Services at Barclays Africa. He then spent three and a half years as a management consultant within the financial services sector before taking up the role of Bursar at Radley College.\nAndrew plays a significant role in the local community and was previously a governor and Chair of the Resources Committee at Radley Primary School. He is now a trustee and former Chair of the Radley Lakes Trust\, a governor of Shiplake College and Chair of the Organisation\, Remuneration and Nominations Committee of the Boarding Schools’ Association. Despite growing up in Newcastle\, Andrew considers Radley and the surrounding area as his spiritual home. He is married to Jillian\, and they have one son\, Philip. In his occasional spare time\, Andrew can be found playing real tennis or exploring the beautiful Oxfordshire countryside\, either in running trainers or walking boots.
