This term’s online forum will be of interest whether you are new to boarding\, have only worked in one school for a long time\, or are simply curious about various types of boarding schools. We will hear from TIOB members working in a range of settings and will explore different types of boarding and ways of working. There is so much TIOB members can learn from each other\, and the forum might come in handy when making a decision about your next career move. \nBOOK NOW \nSpeakers: \nJake Albon\, Head of Boarding at Moulsford Prep \n \nJake graduated from Loughborough University with a sports coaching degree and has an IPGCE from the University of Buckingham. He has been a teacher at Moulsford Prep school for nine years\, of which the last eight have been in boarding. Jake took over as Head of Boarding in September 2022. He teaches PE\, ICT & Games. \nMarcus Carter\, Head of Boarding at Handcross Park \n \nMarcus graduated from Cardiff University with an English Language degree and has a PGCE from the University of Brighton. Since then\, he has also completed a Masters in Education and achieved a BSA Advanced Certificate in Pastoral Care and Boarding Management. Marcus has taught at Handcross Park since 2017\, in a variety of roles\, but currently teaches English and Games. He was appointed Head of Boarding in September 2022 and experienced an ISI inspection within his first few months in post. \nRebecca Jarrett\, Head of Boarding at Marlborough College Malaysia \n \nRebecca entered teaching after completing her MA in Biological Anthropology at Cambridge and her PGCE at Oxford. She was Assistant Boarding Housemistress at Wellington College before taking over her own mixed\, sixth form boarding house at LVS Ascot in 2014. She and her husband Tom have both worked closely with BSA\, and she has enjoyed writing some of their briefing papers\, magazine articles and delivering seminars. In 2019 the family moved to Malaysia where Rebecca took over a senior girls boarding house at Marlborough College just as the pandemic struck! She continues in her role as Housemistress and was recently appointed Head of Boarding. \nRebecca represented Cambridge at lacrosse and hockey\, and has coached school hockey\, netball and rounders as well as running a variety of activities including a dissection club and teaching art. She has completed several marathons\, climbed Kilimanjaro and loves travelling\, with a particular passion for Africa. She and Tom have three children and since moving to Malaysia the family have enjoyed extensive travels in South East Asia. \nMairion Goodman\, Head of Coaching at Monkton Combe School \n \nMairion has a fairly unusual journey into boarding! She graduated from Leeds University with Joint Hons English & French. She then trained for ordination in the Anglican church\, adding a degree in Applied Theology along the way. She spent 10 years working in a church in Bristol before starting the adventure of working in boarding. She has looked after a girls’ house at Monkton Combe School\, caring for a mixture of boarders and day pupils since 2015. She is Monkton’s Head of Coaching: training staff and pupils (and now parents as well!) in conversational coaching skills\, as part of the school vision to develop independent and reflective learners.

This makes “Managing Difficult Conversations” with people whom we live and work with challenging. \nWhat does ‘difficult’ mean? \nOur brain is our own central computer that takes in information from the world around us and gives that information meaning. However\, different people interpret events and information differently. We don’t all see the same thing in the same way. Her business is a training and coaching consultancy. \nWith over 30 years in construction\, retail\, hospitality\, recruitment\, education\, supply chain\, international trade\, and public and charity sectors she has trained thousands of managers\, team leaders\, supervisors and charge hands. \nEvery part of growing up;  at school and in Tracy-Anne’s early career was influenced by people who ‘believed’ in her. Without these people giving her a chance\, taking faith in her ability\, and supporting her progression she would not have developed into the person she is today. \nShe has a strong belief\, that if you reach for the stars and you work hard your background does not need to hold you back. It was from there\, in 2010\, that he headed north\, to take on the role of Headmaster at Ashville College in Harrogate\, an HMC co-educational day and boarding school with 870 pupils. He has been an ISI team inspector\, a school governor and Chair of the Boarding School’s Association and is now in his seventh year as Headmaster of Strathallan School. \nMark is married to music teacher Caroline\, and has two sons\, both now at university. In his spare time\, he enjoys wild camping in the Scottish islands and walking in the hills.

She is currently trying to understand how so many years working in boarding have passed!

Using his personal and professional experiences\, he is now a resilience coach\, helping individuals and teams to achieve healthy high performance\, offering an understanding of the impact of resilient thoughts and resilient actions on overall levels of wellbeing. He is an accredited Workplace Resilience and Wellbeing Master Practitioner\, trained by the Wellbeing Project\, and has extensive experience as an educational consultant. \nIn 2020\, he founded Project 1000 Ltd\, a company that focuses on delivering coaching and consultancy. Andrew identified his key stress triggers and wanted to work for himself. He counted back 1000 days from his 55th birthday that happened to be World Mental Health Day and his future began! \nIn addition to his time as a Head\, he has also undertaken most roles within boarding\, including as a GAP student\, houseparent\, governor  and worked as Director of Training and then International Director for the BSA\, before becoming a BSA Senior Consultant. \nIn this webinar\, Andrew will not only share his personal experiences but he will offer some opportunities to find solutions that just might help to make the difference to those struggling to achieve that life / work balance that can be so difficult in a boarding environment. He is working with the BSA to provide that additional support to practitioners who might need it. He wishes he knew then what he knows now! \nStandard 11.4 of the National Minimum Standards for Boarding (September 5 2022) ensures that\, ‘The school identifies at least one person other than a parent\, outside the staff\, and those responsible for the leadership and governance of the school\, who children may contact directly about personal problems or concerns at the school. This person may be known as the ‘independent person’. Children know who this person is\, know how to contact them and feel comfortable talking to them. SUMMARY:Flexi-boarding models
DESCRIPTION:Date: April 30\, 2024\nTime: 10:00 – 12:00\nCost: TIOB Member Rate – £110\, Non-member Rate – £220\nAudience: Boarding staff\, matrons\, boarding tutors\, house parents. This session is focussed on boarding staff in prep schools but equally applicable to those in a senior school\nPlatform: Zoom (online) – 1/2 day seminar\n\n\nCourse Outline: \nBoarding school staff must carefully balance the needs and schedules of both flexi boarders and full boarders. \nFlexi boarders\, who may only stay on campus a few nights a week\, may require less supervision and structure than full boarders\, who live on campus full-time. To accommodate both types of students\, staff may need to be flexible with scheduling and have different levels of supervision for each group. Additionally\, they may need to create separate spaces or activities for flexi boarders to ensure they have a sense of belonging and connection to the school community. \nCommunication with both students and their families is also important to ensure everyone is on the same page and expectations are clear. For house parents\, the challenges will involve the logistics of flexi boarding management in relation to booking systems and staffing. For the school and the boarding house\, the important questions will be identifying why pupils’ flexi-board and how\, as a boarding community\, we embrace the growing demand.  \nLearning Outcomes:  \n\nTo develop a robust system of registering flexi boarders\nTo develop an induction process for flexi boarders in line with NMS (National Minimum Standards)\nCreating a stable environment for full boarders with little disruption from flexi-boarders\nIdentifying the logistics caused by flexi-boarding that need to be resolved.\n\nDelegates will leave the session with a range of techniques to plan flexi boarding logistics\, enabling the boarding team to become more efficient in planning and organisation. He was educated at Emanuel School and graduated with honours in Chemistry from King’s College\, London. His first headship took him to Somerset where he was Headmaster of Sexey’s School (BSA) in Bruton. Prior to this he was Deputy Head at Bedford School (HMC)\, Director of Science at St Benedict’s School in Ealing (HMC)\, Senior Housemaster at Whitgift School (HMC) and Assistant Housemaster and Teacher of Chemistry at The Haberdashers’ Aske’s School for Boys (HMC). He has been the Chairman of the State Boarding Schools’ Forum\, the Vice Chair of the Boarding Schools’ Association and is currently it’s London Chair. He also sits on the Executive Committee of the BSA as the Inclusion and Diversity representative for the sector and is the co-founder of the ISC’s Inclusion and Diversity Group.  He regularly lectures at the Royal Institution of Great Britain\, is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts\, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and is also a Justice of the Peace. As well as being a school Governor\, he is also the trustee of various charities and used to sit on the Board of Education at the Diocese of Bath & Wells. He is a keen cook\, traveller and adventurer and recently led expeditions to Everest Base Camp\, Venezuela and the Red Sea. It will also consider whether the protections are adequate and whether they allow Schools to genuinely demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusivity. \nSpeaker:  Gemma Woodhouse\, Partner\, Penningtons Manches Cooper LLP \nGemma is an employment partner at Penningtons Manches Cooper. She advises organisations on all elements of employment law including discrimination and equal opportunities. She also works with a number of independent schools and is joint Head of the Penningtons Manches Cooper Schools Sector. \n  \n  \n  \n\nLeadership Challenges and Opportunities \nHow can you lead as effectively as possible\, building capacity and confidence so that others move forward and achieve all they can? This session will explore the challenges that leadership presents\, alongside the opportunities it can offer\, and how you can make the most of them. \n\nCase studies\, Discussion and Next Steps  \nThis session will provide an opportunity to hear first-hand from school leaders about EDI work in their schools. The case studies will cover a range of different areas from the importance of pupil voice to recruitment. Participants will then have the chance to meet and discuss EDI work in their schools with other Inclusion Lead colleagues (in small zoom break out groups). To end the day\, we will briefly consider next steps and things to be researching or thinking about before the second day of this course. \nSpeaker:  Shamiela Davids\, Director of Innovation and Head of Senior Girls Boarding\, Hockerill Anglo-European College \nShamiela has worked at Hockerill since 2003 and before that held senior roles including Deputy Head of Senior School\, Head of International Dimension as well as having been Head of English at the English College in Prague and the Ahliyyah School for Girls in Amman Jordan. Shamiela is very excited to have recently been nominated for the Chartered College of Teaching Fellowship. In her own time\, Shamiela consults on Inclusion and her area of specialism is narratology – using stories as a cohesive tool across organisations. \n  \n  \nSpeaker:  Aiyaz Ahmed\, Biology Teacher and Diversity Champion\, Eastbourne College \nAiyaz has been teaching at Eastbourne College for five years and started up a pupil lead diversity forum named BE YOU four years ago\, which he currently leads. Over the years this has become more popular and an integral part of the college. It has shaped the culture of the college community and has also empowered young people to be part of the changes that promote inclusivity and diversity. Aiyaz is passionately dedicated to his role and works collaboratively with the PSHE lead\, HR\, HoDs and SMT to drive the changes that they feel will make the college more diverse and inclusive. Prior to this\, Aiyaz taught science at inner London secondary schools for ten years. \n  \n\nEquity\, Diversity and Inclusion: Safeguarding and Inspection \nThis session will look at safeguarding with an equity\, diversity and inclusion lens and will consider key inspection requirements. \n \nSpeaker:  Dale Wilkins\, Senior Director\, BSA and BSA Group \nDale joined the BSA during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards. In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board and has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding since 2002. Dale had previously been a BSA course tutor since 1998 and developed the BSA Self-Assessment Toolkit\, which was updated in 2022. \n  \n\nSupportive Conversations \nThis session will explore the need for a Coaching Mindset when having supportive and robust conversations about sensitive and important topics. We will explore what coaching is and is not\, as well as learn skills you can immediately use with students and staff. \nSpeaker:  McKenzie Cerri\, Co-founder of Graydin \nMcKenzie has over 15 years of experience in coaching and teacher-training within education. She is one of the co-founders of Graydin\, an organisation working to revolutionise the ways we support\, empower and connect within the school environment. Together with more than 150 schools and universities worldwide\, Graydin has been at the forefront of the coaching movement in education since 2011. Prior to Graydin\, she was a youth coach and worked closely with the Maudsley Hospital eating disorder unit to develop content for suffers and carers. Born in California\, now based in London\, UK\, she took her first personal development course at age nine. \n  \n  \n\nIdentity\, Belonging and Connectedness \nThis session will explore the notions of identity\, belonging and connectedness. Coco will share her own stories of identity and belonging as well as her experiences of working with young people in schools. She founded Trouble Sleeping troublesleeping.co.uk in 2006 to help companies and individuals with better sleep. Dr Browning’s qualifications include two degrees in neuroscience and psychology and also a doctorate from the University of Oxford where she specifically studied the treatment of insomnia. This award-winning platform offers a proactive approach to young people’s mental health and wellbeing by providing evidenced-based support for the whole school community – staff\, parents\, carers and pupils.  The platform is currently impacting more than 130\,000 pupils in over 220 schools. \n\nWill Gardner\, CEO\, Childnet \nWill Gardner is the CEO of Childnet International\, a children’s charity working with others to help make the internet a great and safe place for children. \nWill has worked at Childnet since 2000 and has been the CEO since 2009 and has led numerous regional\, national and international projects and programmes promoting child online safety\, developing many award-winning resources. \nHe is also a Director of the UK Safer Internet Centre\, in which Childnet\, working with partners the IWF and SWGfL\, organises Safer Internet Day in the UK every year\, a campaign that reaches 50% of children and over a third of parents and carers. He is also an Executive Board member of the UK Council for Internet Safety and founded and chairs the Early Warning Working Group of helplines\, hotlines and law enforcement. He is a member of Meta’s Safety Advisory Council\, Internet Matters’ Expert Group and the Advisory Board of the Anti-bullying Alliance \n\nEd Venables\, Head\, Eagle House School \nAfter studying Classics at Oxford university and a 12-year career in the investment banking and private equity world in the City\, Ed returned to his old school\, Wellington College\, to teach Economics and Business.  His time at Wellington saw him being Head of the Economics department\, Housemaster of his former boarding house for six years and\, finally\, Director of Admissions and a member of the Executive Leadership Team.  In September 2023 Ed moved to become Head of Eagle House School\, Wellington’s 3-13 prep school.  Ed remains on the Wellington ELT. \nEd is married and has three sons.  Away from school\, he lives in Anglesey\, North Wales\, and loves getting there in the holidays for lots of walking\, running and time in and on the sea! \n\nJane Lunnon\, Head\, Alleyn’s School \nJane Lunnon became the first female Head of Alleyn’s School in January 2021 after six years as Head of Wimbledon High School and as Senior Deputy at Wellington School from 2010-2014 under Anthony Seldon’s headship. Her experience in senior leadership in both single-sex and co-educational environments\, including her time at Prior’s Field School\, spans a variety of roles: Head of English\, Assistant Director of Studies\, Head of Sixth Form\, Deputy Pastoral and Housemaster’s wife. \nJane is a trustee of the Royal Springboard Foundation\, chair and founder of the Coalition for Youth Mental Health in Schools\, a Trustee of the Dulwich Picture Gallery\, and sits on the Board of Governors for the London Academy of Excellence Tottenham\, Barrow Hills School and King Edward’s School\, Witley and as well as on the GSA / HMC Joint Universities Committee. \nHer first book\, “The State of Independence”\, co-written with Dr David James\, was first published by Routledge in 2019 and examines the challenges and opportunities for independent education. A second edition was published in February 2023.  She is now working on her second book: “Schools of Thought” due to be published in February 2024.  Jane was named Tatler Head of the Year in 2020. \nShe is married to Neill Lunnon who is also a Head (of Tower House School) and has two children. Her identical twin sister\, Jenny Brown\, is also Head of an independent London day school – which makes for many interesting conversations over dinner! \n\nTyler John\, Head of Diversity\, Equality and Inclusion\, St Paul’s School \nTyler John (he/they) is the Head of Diversity\, Equality and Inclusion at St Paul’s School in Barnes. Tyler started their career as an intern\, and has delivered strategic DEI work across a number of different sectors. They really value the role that education plays in facilitating diverse and inclusive spaces\, and enjoys working with open-minded and forward-thinking students in their role. \n  \n\nSarah Griffiths\, Deputy Head (Pastoral and Wellbeing)\, Caterham School \nNamed as an innovator and influencer in UK independent education\, Sarah has been developing and promoting wellbeing in education for over a decade. A big supporter of ‘the whole school approach’\, her work at Caterham School centres around proactive pastoral care\, underpinned by a strong wellbeing curriculum and complimented by a focus on staff wellbeing and engaging parents. Her current school has 1300 pupils aged from 3-18\, with a proportion of international boarders and she is also a governor at a local primary school.\nSarah is a Maths graduate who taught at Dulwich College for 11 years\, as well as being Head of Wellbeing\, before joining Caterham School in 2017 as Deputy Head (Pastoral and Wellbeing). She is a Maths teacher and a mum of three. \n\nBen Collingwood\, Partner\, Schools & Charities\, Moore Barlow \nBen specialises in advising independent schools and other charities on wide ranging areas of education law\, with particular focus on reputation issues\, pastoral\, safeguarding\, historic abuse allegations\, SEN\, exclusions\, parent/pupil complaints\, data protection\, parent contracts\, admissions and staff matters of all types. \nBen has written and spoken widely on issues facing the independent schools sector\, providing comment in The Times\, The Guardian\, The Lawyer and Law Society’s Gazette and at the national conferences and training programmes for the various associations that support independent schools including BSA\, ISBA\, HMC\, IAPS and AGBIS. \nBen lives with his wife and three children in West Sussex. He has been a devoted surfer since my childhood and loves to spend as much of his free time as possible in the sea and walking his pointers with his family. \n\n \nAdam McRae-Taylor\, Legal Director\, Schools & Charities\, Moore Barlow \nI specialise in employment and education law and advise on issues such as unfair dismissal\, discrimination cases\, safeguarding\, parent contracts and data protection issues including in relation to the GDPR. \nMy approach is to work with schools and charities to ensure that they are managing their staff fairly and lawfully\, as a happy workforce. This not only helps an organisation thrive and grow\, but also prevents managers from being distracted by disputes. Where contentious issues do arise\, I am experienced in employment tribunal litigation and I regularly advise on employment claims such as unfair dismissal\, whistleblowing and discrimination. \nI trained and qualified in employment law with a Magic Circle firm in London. Before joining the Schools & Charities Team at Moore Barlow LLP (formerly Barlow Robbins LLP)\, I spent two years working in-house for a charity which gave me an invaluable perspective on how to provide practical advice on the issues charities commonly face. \n\nJoanna Lada-Walicki\, Head of Schools & Charities\, Moore Barlow \nJoanna heads the Moore Barlow’s independent schools and charities practice. She specialises in education and employment law. She advises on a range of employment and pastoral issues\, in particular when the reputation of a school is at stake. \nAn area of particular interest for Joanna is safeguarding and she has spoken widely on this subject national conferences and has also written widely on this and other issues affecting schools and charities. \nA major part of our practice is in relation to the management of allegations against staff as well as child-on-child abuse\, including guidance on making appropriate referrals. This inevitably overlaps with the question of sex and gender and Joanna has particular interest in how schools support and safeguard trans-gender people. \n\n \nRhiannon Williams\, Senior Director (Safeguarding\, Legal and Complaints)\, Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) \nRhiannon was formerly Director of Studies at a large day and boarding prep school for children aged 3-13. \nRhiannon has worked in the education sector for over a decade\, prior to which she was an environmental lawyer. This included working in regulatory compliance at the European Commission\, and as a university lecturer and researcher. \nRhiannon is a former solicitor\, whose qualifications include PGCE (Cantab)\, MA Law (Cantab) and Licence Spéciale en Droit Européen (ULB). \n\n \nAlex Large\, Head of Boarding\, The Royal School\, Wolverhampton \nDespite trying his best not to follow in his father’s footsteps\, Alex opted to study economics at Newcastle University but still ended up becoming a maths teacher. As a day pupil at Taunton School\, he spent many evenings in the company of the boarders there while his father did evening duties or stayed to finish his marking. This is where the fascination with boarding began and is now a self-confessed boarding enthusiast. Currently the Head of Boarding and a member of the Senior Leadership Team at The Royal School\, Wolverhampton\, Alex has developed excellent links with charities and external government agencies to support the pastoral needs of boarders at school\, culminating in national recognition with both individual and school awards. \nAlex lives onsite with his wife\, Sarah\, and their two young sons – Harry and Thomas who want to become the next Ben Stokes and Rory McIlroy respectively. During the winter he plays 1st XI hockey for Finchfield\, whilst in the summer holidays he can be found on his paddleboard in Barmouth Bay. \n\n \nMadeleine Killacky\, Housemistress and Mathematics Teacher\, Moreton Hall School \nMadeleine Killacky is a Housemistress and Mathematics teacher at Moreton Hall School in Shropshire. She was awarded the BSA Research Fellowship for 2023-24 and is currently researching creativity and unstructured play in boarding settings. \n  \n  \n\nNaima Charlier\, Director of Equality\, Diversity\, Inclusion\, and Social Responsibility\, Wellington College \nNaima Charlier brings over 25 years of teaching experience\, including more than 20 years in international school settings across the UK\, USA\, Romania\, and Hong Kong. With a background spanning Early Years\, Primary\, and Secondary education\, she has held various leadership roles for over 16 years\, including Founding Head\, Deputy Principal\, and Director of Teaching and Learning. Naima holds an MBA in International Educational Leadership from UCL and serves as a Lead Improvement Partner for COBIS. She advocates passionately for inclusive leadership and prioritises EDI initiatives in schools. \n  \n\nMartin Reader\, Headmaster\, Cranleigh School \nMartin Reader is currently Head of Cranleigh School. He began his teaching career at St Edward’s Oxford\, before moving to Oundle School and then to Reigate Grammar School where he was Senior Deputy Head. Prior to moving to Cranleigh\, he was Headmaster of Wellington School\, Somerset for eight years. Passionate about boarding\, he served as Chair of the BSA in 2018\, and Vice Chair in 2017 and 2019. He is also a trustee of the BSA Foundation and the Hawk and Owl Trust. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Fellow of the Institute of Boarding. \n  \n\nAreti Bizior\, Headmistress\, Luckley House School \nAreti is the Headmistress at Luckley House School. Prior to that\, she was Deputy Headmistress at Downe House for seven years\, Assistant Headmistress at Queen Anne’s School in Caversham and Head of House at St. George’s\, Ascot. Areti holds an MBA from UCL\, alongside a BSc\, BEd and PGCE. She is an Inspector for ISI and a published author. Areti is a member of the Executive Committee of the BSA and sits on various Advisory Boards and Governing Bodies. \n\nSpeakers from the BSA Team: \nDavid Walker\, Executive Director\, Boarding\, BSA Group \nDavid is the Executive Director and joined the BSA group in August 2023. He has over 20 years’ experience in boarding schools and has worked in a range of schools in the UK and Africa\, alongside being a prep school governor and a trustee of a MAT. Before taking up his post at the BSA\, David was Deputy Head Pastoral at a large co-ed independent school in the South-East. \n  \n\nGaelle Sullivan\, Research and Inclusion Director\, BSA Group \nGaelle is Head of Research Services and Inclusion and joined the BSA in January 2023. She is an experienced senior leader and has worked in a range of state and independent schools. She is a qualified SENCO and holds a Masters Degree in Inclusive Education. Prior to joining the BSA\, Gaelle was Deputy Head Pastoral\, DSL and Head of Boarding at an all-girls independent school in the South-East. \n  \n\nLee Glaser\, Director\, Hieda and Group Services Director\, BSA Group \nLee has extensive experience in pastoral care. Prior to becoming Headmaster and CEO at Taunton School in Somerset he was the School’s Deputy Head which involved leading the pastoral team and being the Designated Safeguarding Lead. Outstanding support for student and staff wellbeing has always been at the heart of his approach and the School was recently shortlisted for a TES Award for excellence in this area. \nLee has always worked closely with the School’s medical team which provided excellent support to the community\, particularly during the COVID pandemic.
