Safeguarding the needs of the pupils in your care is paramount to any boarding role. In the home-from-home environment of boarding where you are in loco parentis, supporting real-life events of those in your care, building and maintaining appropriate relationships is critical.
This course will provide you with strategies to manage pupil relationships in a safe and practical way.
Lorraine Atkins FTIOB
Director, The Institute of Boarding (TIOB)
Lorraine Atkins is the Director of TIOB and has worked in virtually all roles within the boarding community in both the UK and overseas.
She started her teaching career as a geography teacher at Lawnside School, Malvern in 1988, before moving on to King’s School, Worcester in 1994 and then Wycliffe College, where she was Head of Geography and Housemistress from 1997 to 2007. From 2007 to 2012, she was Senior Mistress and Head of Geography at Malvern College, before taking on a new role as Deputy Head of Malvern College Qingdao, China in 2012 and then Head in 2014. More recently, Lorraine was Principal of Padworth College following her time as Principal of Bishopstrow College.
Richard Penny
Richard Penny was educated at Exeter School and Swansea University before serving in the British Army for 10 years. In 2010 he completed his Geography PGCE and has taught at Malvern College, Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls, Cheltenham College and Bradfield College where he is currently Deputy Head (Pastoral). Richard has been a Head of Geography, CCF Contingent Commander, Housemaster and Senior Housemaster, as well as completing his MEd in Educational Leadership which focussed on team building and reflective practice in the boarding environment. In his free time Richard enjoys surfing, being outdoors, ultra-marathons and supporting the Exeter Chiefs.
