Job Description

Job Title: Assistant Housemaster/Housemistress (AHSM)

Location: Sedbergh School

Contract Type: Full time, permanent, residential

Salary: £24,767 per annum + accommodation (please note that this is based on a 5-day working week).

Sedbergh School, founded in 1525 by Roger Lupton, is an independent co-educational boarding school. Set in the spectacular Yorkshire Dales National Park, the School also benefits from fast motorway and rail access to the rest of the UK.

The School has an excellent reputation in academics, sports, and creative arts, which has led to continued growth in the pupil roll for the past ten years. Circa 600 pupils are accommodated in a full boarding school environment and a further 200 at Sedbergh Prep School in Casterton.

We are now seeking a full time Assistant Housemaster or Housemistress (AHSM), to provide outstanding welfare support to pupils, in support of the Housemaster/Housemistress (HSM).

The duties of the role will be wide and varied, but it is essential for the AHSM to be able to demonstrate an empathy with and understanding of young people, a sense of humour and a genuine concern for the pupils’ well-being and active involvement in their personal development. You will be required to positively encourage the pupils in their interests and activities and develop a professional and friendly relationship with them. You will also provide support in the maintenance of morale, standards and the efficient operation of the Boarding House.

Our ideal candidate will have experience of working with children aged 13-18 years old and relevant qualifications in medical or welfare related roles would be desirable. Excellent interpersonal, problem solving and organisational skills are also essential, as is the ability to work flexibly, maintaining a focus on quality at all times.

There is one post available from January 2024.

In exchange the School will offer:

  • A competitive salary;
  • Contributory Pension Scheme – to include life cover while remaining within the scheme;
  • Enhanced Sick Pay entitlement – conditional on meeting the demands of the scheme;
  • Ride2Work;
  • Service awards;
  • Opportunity to see School productions;
  • Staff events and family fun days!
  • Use of the School’s vast facilities (outside the School timetabling) including the indoor swimming pool, tennis and squash courts and Hirst Sport Centre.
