Pay and benefits

  • The annual salary for the post is £14,500.
  • Accommodation is provided during term time and school holidays for the duration of the fixed-term contract. Accommodation will consist of own bedroom and shared communal lounge, kitchenette and bathroom with another graduate in the boarding house.
  • All meals are provided during term-time.

  • There is car parking on site, and the School is easily accessible by bus.
  • At specified times, staff may use the school’s Fitness Suite, and during Trinity Term staff may use the swimming pool at the advertised times.

The Post

The School provides all-female boarding accommodation and we are looking for a graduate to join our Boarding Team from January 2024 until July 2024 or December 2024 , to be discussed at interview. The Graduate Assistants contribute to the family approach that we provide for our boarders. We welcome girls from Year 5 to Year 13 into our boarding community which helps to replicate the family feel and big sister support that would be available in a home setting. This position is suitable for graduates who may be considering a career in education or youth work.

Graduate Assistants are linked with an academic department in the School where they will be able to develop their understanding of curriculum, teaching, planning and learning. If you have energy, are willing to be adaptable and flexible to put the needs of the children first, and enjoy getting the best from children, this is the role for you. We are looking for a Graduate Assistant with an interest in all areas of school life. This is a residential position with some overnight calls.

The Graduate Assistant is responsible to the Head of Boarding.

Boarding

  • Delivering first-class care to all boarders through the mentoring, opportunities to build professional relationships with boarders and the organisation of activities to develop the child’s talents and skills.
  • Assisting with the activity programme in the evenings and at weekends by planning, leading, assisting and engaging our boarders.
  • Introducing new opportunities to build relationships between pupils and to introduce them to cultural aspects of living in Oxford.
  • Supervising boarders during prep, dinner, bed times and ensuring that all pupils are ready for school each morning.
  • Supporting boarding life through the completion of general administrative duties such as ordering food, making posters, updating display boards.
  • Ensuring that the boarding house is kept tidy, setting up for breakfast and other meals, clearing away after meals, collecting 4pm snacks and other food orders form the catering department.
  • Assisting with matters concerning boarders’ health in accordance with the School’s procedures, administering first aid as necessary (first aid training will be provided in induction week).
  • Supporting boarders who are ill or in isolation, including delivering meals and drinks to their rooms.
  • Escorting boarders as necessary to various out of school appointments.
  • Supporting and monitoring boarders at prep time, assisting as required with homework especially for younger boarders.
  • Registering boarders at designated times and having a clear understanding of the importance of knowing the whereabouts of boarders at all times. Know the procedure for a missing pupil (missing pupil policy).
  • Undertake training to enable the better performance of your role; food hygiene, allergy awareness, health & safety,

Teaching and learning

  • Promoting excellence in supporting teaching and learning, embedding The Rye Way in all lessons, and ensuring that pupils develop their potential, are ambitious in their learning, and are equipped for life beyond school.
  • Exemplifying in own practice a willingness to develop outstanding skills of teaching and learning which enable pupils to make excellent progress and further build on the culture of success.
  • Supporting the academic department and Teacher Mentor to monitor pupils’ work, and track and analyse pupil progress to ensure high levels of attainment for all pupils.
  • Attending Teaching and Learning workshops in school to develop an understanding of good practice and effective teaching for excellence.

  • Actively participating in educational outreach and promoting the key stage, phase, or department within the school community, to encourage pupils’ interest in the subject area or school.
  • Promoting the whole school in a variety of different contexts, including attending marketing events where appropriate, and in interactions with parents and prospective parents and pupils.
  • Preparing for open days and other marketing events.

Person specification

Essential

  • Graduate with an interest in working with children and young people
  • Previous experience of working with children and young people in a paid or voluntary role
  • Able to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing
  • A positive outlook, good sense of humour and able to stay calm in a crisis
  • A good listener who can build effective relationships with pupils, staff and parents
  • Able to establish a strong rapport with pupils, asserting authority when needed and maintaining appropriate boundaries
  • Proactive in approach and able to seek advice and support in a timely fashion when appropriate
  • Flexible attitude towards duties and working patterns in order to fulfil the requirements of the role
  • Understanding of and support for the Christian and Catholic ethos of the school
  • Professional but approachable demeanour
  • Ability to plan, prepare and run an activity (e.g. baking, craft, fitness, games, nature walk)

Desirable

  • Full, clean driving licence.
  • Lifesaving certificate
  • IT and administration skills

Holidays and time off

Graduate Assistants will be required to work five and a half days a week with one and a half days off consecutively. The Head of boarding sets the duty rota and it is fixed, however flexibility is needed to ensure the needs of the pupils are met.

Time off is limited during the first and last week of term to ensure the boarders are welcomed to the house and supported on departure. Boarding staff are all expected to be on duty in house two days before the start of term to prepare the house for the boarders.

All boarding staff will work a full week before the start of the new academic year. This week will include a full induction to boarding and school life, online and in person training, preparation of the boarding house, team building and preparing the induction program for the new boarders.

Safeguarding
