Job Description

Embley is a leading independent day and boarding school for boys and girls aged 2–18 on the edge of the New Forest, near Romsey in Hampshire.

We believe that every child is unique and deserves the recognition of that as they grow. We are academically ambitious for our children and motivate them to achieve their personal best. We encourage an appropriate belief in oneself while being mindful that the world does not end at the tip of one’s nose and that happiness in life is through success in enriching the lives of others.

The school occupies the home of Florence Nightingale and our 130 acres of parkland provide a calm and beautiful space in which to work and enable pupils to learn, play, compete and achieve.

We are an equal opportunities employer and committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. We expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

The role

We are seeking a female Assistant Houseparent for the girls’ wing of a co-ed boarding house to fulfil and develop an important and rewarding role within the boarding family at Embley. This could be suitable for a non-teaching applicant.

At Embley we operate a 5-day teaching week, plus sports matches and fixtures on Saturday mornings, and therefore the boarding team mostly provide care in the mornings, evenings and at weekends (as per the boarding rota). For the boarding team this includes organising, leading and taking part in various fun and memorable trips and activities, so we would very much welcome candidates with additional and/or varied hobbies, interests and skills that could bring something extra to the boarding programme.

About You

You will need to take initiative, be proactive, professional, confident in their abilities and communication skills, to swiftly learn the rules and routines of the house and get to know each of the boarders well; particularly to be able to deputise successfully for the Heads of Boarding, when on duty and as required. All boarding staff should enjoy the company of young people, including those from different cultures and be understanding of their needs. Ideally you will hold a D1 Category driving licence or be able to complete a MiDAS minibus assessment test.

United Learning

Embley is part of United Learning, a large, and growing, group of schools aiming to offer a life changing education to children and young people across England.

Our schools work as a team and achieve more by sharing than any single school could. Our subject specialists, our Group-wide intranet, our own curriculum and our online learning portal all help us share knowledge and resource, helping to simplify work processes and manage workloads for an improved work-life balance.

As a Group, we can reward our staff better: with good career opportunities, better pay, benefits, and ultimately, the satisfaction of helping children to succeed. We invest in our staff wellbeing. It’s an ethos we call ‘the best in everyone’.

We are working hard to become a more diverse organisation – which is key to our commitment to bringing out the best in everyone. We welcome applications from everyone committed to this ethos and would particularly welcome applications from black and minority ethnic candidates, who are currently under-represented in the Group as a whole. We always appoint on merit. We are open to discussing flexible working options.
