Job Description

Bursar and Clerk to Governors

Silcoates is a successful independent co-educational day school of more than 500 pupils aged 3 to 18 years. The School is set in 52 acres of beautiful parkland on the outskirts of Wakefield, in West Yorkshire, within easy reach of the M1 and M62. Founded in 1820, the School has a long and proud history and takes its name from the original building, Silcoates Hall. As an ‘all-through’ school, its aim is to bring out the very best in every pupil through instilling in them a love of learning and a willingness to seize every opportunity.

We are seeking an outstanding Bursar to support the Head and Board in developing and implementing our ambitious plans for Silcoates. Substantial investment has been made in the School’s facilities over the last few years and there are aspirational plans for further development over the next ten years. This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated, proactive and business minded individual to join the Senior Leadership Team and play a pivotal role in the ongoing strategic development of the School.

The Bursar will provide leadership to a diverse team of support staff and ensure the successful management of the day-to-day non-educational operations of the School, including finance, estates and buildings, HR, catering and soft-services, risk management and the commercial activities of the School. The Bursar also fulfils the role of Clerk to the Governors so will be required to have – or develop- an understanding of Governance requirements in the sector.

The successful candidate will be an individual of proven senior leadership ability, a strategic thinker and able to establish highly effective, collaborative working relationships with Governors and colleagues at all levels. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, exceptional financial acumen and robust commercial judgement will be essential. Candidates will have a genuine interest in and empathy for education, but prior school bursar experience is not a pre-requisite.
