Job Description

Head of Boarding (Live in) – to start 8 April 2024 (Sidmouth, Devon)
Full Time / Permanent
St. John’s School requires a Head of Boarding to lead our residential team and to liaise with our sister schools and
agents around the world, to promote Boarding, whilst offering a caring, safe and positive environment for Boarders
between 11 and 16 years.
We offer a competitive salary, Aviva Pension scheme and the provision of a 2-bedroom flat with its own bathroom,
kitchen, extra utility area and private entrance.
Whilst this is primarily a non-teaching role, some teaching may be available for the right candidate who is in
possession of QTS.
We are an independent day and Boarding school, overlooking the sea, in the beautiful Regency town of Sidmouth,
in East Devon, for boys and girls aged 2½ – 16. We are a relatively small school that caters for around 160 local day
students, combined with a contingent of international Boarders from more than 10 countries around the globe.
The majority of our Boarders are EAL, native Spanish speakers, arriving for a term from our sister schools across
continental Europe, South and Central America. Although they aspire to become fluent in conversational English,
most will take part in separate EAL classes at the same time as GCSE or mainstream English. It is possible that some
Boarders will sit 2nd Language or even First Language Spanish GCSE.
Academic expectations in the school are high, but we also believe that our students’ ability to communicate
successfully, to consider the needs of others and to show drive, empathy, leadership and initiative are all
attributes that will help them achieve success as well as make a significant contribution to society in later life.
Our school land extends over roughly 7 acres and has its own stream, woodland, horticultural area and Forest
School, along with sports pitches, sports’ hall, an indoor / outdoor swimming pool and tennis courts. It makes for a
stimulating, learning environment, and a very special ‘home away from home’.
IES’s mission is to provide excellence in education within an international perspective. The International Education
Systems group (IES) promotes the development of young people who will have the capacity to contribute
proactively to the on-going work towards a better world.
Closing Date: Friday 26 January 2024 at Noon *
