Source: Values-based hiring is just as important for support staff | Tes
Teacher recruitment and retention challenges in England are well known, but the difficulty in recruiting and retaining non-teaching staff, such as administrators, learning support, and operational teams, is often overlooked. These staff are essential to the functioning of schools, and without them, teaching would be impossible.
Recruitment for support roles must focus more on shared values and commitment to education, not just technical skills. There cannot be enough emphasis on the importance of hiring individuals driven by purpose, emotional intelligence, and the desire to make a positive impact.
Working in schools is demanding and goes far beyond the “9-to-3” stereotype, especially in boarding! Many roles involve year-round responsibilities and require resilience, empathy, and strong service skills.
Ultimately, there needs to be a shift in perspective: schools succeed through the collective efforts of all staff—not just teachers. Values-led recruitment can help attract and retain individuals who are aligned with the school’s mission, contributing meaningfully to pupil success and a positive school community.
